Only gets me like 275 miles because of the pitiful 23g tank. I wish the 24g aux tank that goes in the spare hole wasn't like 3 fucking thousand dollars. And not DOT approved but not CA so who gives a fuck.

Not very. Airing down and suitable tires will make the biggest difference.
They are an advantage in many circumstances, and can make harder tracks easier to drive, though on the beach they make little difference especially if you've already got an LSD in one end.

Is that a 450? if so, did you ever have the issue with the power seat worm gears getting sheared? Mine are totally fucked and I'm debating if it's worth fixing them or just manually adjusting the seat and leaving well enough alone. Thanks. I'll have to dig though mud and see what my options are for brakes are. A set of rotors and pads looks like it's about $300 for an 80 so if there's a better option for another $50 why not. Even moreso if I break all the caliper bolts bleeding it

Fair. The brake lines are brand new-the previous owner tried to solve the braking issue but never bled them so the pedal is absolute trash. I figure I'll just try my luck with some mapp and PB on the bleeders like I do with everything else, and if I end up cooking the caliper(s) I'll just have to find new ones anyway.

Idk about on 80s but new calipers were cheap as chips. Like $150.
On 120s you actually bleed them backwards; fronts first then rears, driverside then passenger. Might check to see if it's the same for those.

Not bad at all, boost limited in first gear, easy around town, solid on the highway into the 90s, tows my boat and trailer fine, shifts smoother and has a more progressive clutch than the JL manual, gas mileage is almost identical to the V6 with the auto, door removal is easier than the wrangler, Soft top is easiler to open in the rear when loading things in the back, no big ass roll bar behind the front seats, base model has LED headlights and A/C standard (option on JL sport)

Caveats: Base radio has crap speakers, a couple windows didn't close automatically but an OTA software update fixed that early on, Power steering pump is on the engine so nudging the wheel when the auto start is active forces the engine to start (JL has an electric pump), can't fold the windshield down, whistling noise in the front end above 65

I would never pay more than sticker but it's a comfy drive, looking to get a tune once warranty is expires

I don't have KDSS or the nice paint though.
What you have to make account for is that KDSS means your aftermarket is now pretty limited; there are quite a few companies than if they even offer a compatible mod it comes at a premium, sometimes over 20% more; KDSS does work but after 1k miles of no swaybars its been fine to drive and waifu hasn't complained.

Your first problem will be when you go to add under armor, they're alot more for KDSS and only a few options.

Rooftents are overpriced memes. Just get the aftermarket replacement roof rack rails and flat cross members, the roof can take 700lbs static but OEM rails only support like 150lbs. Then just set a tent up on the new flat roof rack if you have to be off the ground.

I think I have a small leak up near the y pipe, it's quite a bit louder when you're near the loudener than near the nearly silent exhaust tip end.
Next year it's headers to tip replacement. Fucking 02 sensor codes putting it in limpmode cuz of emissions. Oh well takes 2s to reset every few weeks w the scan tool that lives in the door.

OEM for now, had to use hub spacers because lol +25mm offset. After I refinish them I'll see if I can sell them and pick up a set of bronze TRD takeoffs. Which were originally the prototype FJC wheels but weren't used until the Taco.

Update: went to look at it today. Drives fine and looks great. Cosmetically 9/10. I told him im passing on it because he couldnt give me any documentation on when the timing belt is due or when it was done last.

Ive never owned a vehicle with a timing belt but my brain tells me i made the right choice.

Either way it gets done every 100k, mostly it's the water pump that goes first though. It's a job you can do in your driveway for under $500 in parts. Check Toyota Time with Timmy on yt.

What year/model? I have an '07 Rubicon and can pop my transfercase in and out of 2hi and 4hi on the fly. I was told that to engage 4lo from 4hi it's best to put the trans in neutral, it smoothly goes into 4lo for me. I'm asking because I believe that at least the early JK Rubicons have the same transfercase as what's in the TJ

Lol I did the same thing when I first tried it. I was told that you need to be moving at <5mph to shift into 4lo but got the grinding. I don't understand where this info comes from. I always shift trans into neutral at a stop now, then transfercase from 4hi to 4lo, smooth shifting and never had any problems

Buying a brand new Crosstrek with the 2.5L. If unplowed snow and frequent gravel roads are in its future would it be a complete waste to shell out $600 on a set of aluminum 3/16" primitive racing skid plates? I don't plan any recreational offroading but I live in a rural area and have a large property with some dirt "roads" I might occasionally want to take the car out onto for functional purposes. My farm truck has no skids and loves to just rip up these trails so something with a lighter foot print and some undercladding for dirt/rock/brush protection might be nice. It's going to be my daily driver though.

Yeah, it's pretty lightweight bolt on stuff. The front can go right on top of the factory tupperware and the effect on weight and clearance are extremely minor. I'm more worried about rubbing, brush and gravel while trying to avoid something that would reduce the day to day practicality of the car. I'm not putting A/Ts on the thing but there are dirt roads everywhere and when it snows three feet and I'm late for work I don't want to peel off parts of my car because I didn't have time to shovel.

I want the car version of a gravel bike.

I currently am busriding a 22 Tacoma SR Utility without 4x4. Recently, I sold my MR2 for about $15k and just found out I can trade the Taco for $25k to the same place I bought it from (they sell at MSRP). Also, I live in the Midwest so I deal with snow, I've considered getting AT Tires and a rear locker but from what I understand it still doesn't really help with that.

But I did drive up on wheel wheel ramp and went lock to lock and had no contact otherwise. Granted that's only like half articulated but it looks promising.
Have to move the washer fluid tank out of the wheel well to the engine bay and maybe trim a half inch of plastic off the bottom of the rear bumper.
And oh yes I beat the shit out of the inner wells w a sledge already.

shocks dont help much with the initial impact they just keep the springs from doing springy things after they have taken the initial impact.

what tires/psi you running.
running a little lower tire pressure can help to absorb some of the impacts, but can lead to bad street handling/bad wear if you go to low.

Likely end up trimming the upper wheel fender, there's a little shelf people cut off to clear 35s, I was waiting to do the final trims until I had the 34s mounted. There's like a 3x6" section of the firewall people will cut out and fab in a new concave section to clear 37s.
There are also aftermarket body mounts if you really want to go wild, only a couple hundred bucks too.

Think I figured out the issue. Above the rear axle there's these hard buttplug-looking things that only have like a half-inch of clearance between them and the axle. The drivers side has a little less space even, which explains why the vehicle sags slightly to one side. Do I need to replace the springs or the buttplugs?

Here’s my 2000 Nissan Xterra. This little shit rattles going over bumps on the highway. It’s cost me so much money and take me to some pretty sweet places. 10/10 would make terrible financial decisions again.

Latest thing I did was service the bearings, valve cover gaskets, and diy toe alignment. I found cracks on the brake pads and rotors so I’m swapping those out before my trip this weekend for the 4th of July.

The truck cost $1200, so a $3500 repair bill isn't happening unless I want the engine rebuilt. I can't get engage either of the front or rear lockers without being able to throw it into 4L, and I'd like to know whether or not they work. According to the guys on ih8mud the LC transfer cases have extremely low instances of internal failure, so I'm cautiously optimistic that I can free it up with some grease (elbow, gear, and moly if need be).

See? Plenty of clearance in the rear. This is the best I could do in the driveway with ramps but even at full tuck there won't be any rubbing; just going to trim a little piece in the front and rear well as an extra precaution.

Front still will need a new section on the body mount but it's just a couple thou interference so after alignment with a slight caster adjustment it'll likely be fine as is.
Need to find a big rock to really flex it to see where it will impact into the top of the well at full up travel; it doesn't look like I have much more hammering on the upper seam to do; this also will let me see where it will hit the body panels up top and finish that trim; the final boss will definitely be the firewall, at that point I'll probably just mod it to take 35 to 37s since rest will already be g2g. Would need a regear first.
Speedo adjustment needs to happen b4 it's too late.

Perhaps not offroad per sé, but I have an interest in purchasing a small, economical compact car from the 50s-70s like a Karman Ghia, VW Beetle, Ford Falcon, BMW 2002, Volvo Amazon, or something similar to build a car that can handle very light offroad usage for service roads and dog trails. Does anyone have any rough suggestions for parts for such a build? My main concern is suspension, extra lamps, and roof racks. I'm handy enough with engine work I'm confident regardless of what I purchase I should be able to get working well, but my attention is focused on an active project so I'm hoping to get a suitable car and have it setup for this within two years.

Thought my transfer case may have been bound up, but I soaked it in some pb for a few hours and rocked the truck back and forth while pulling on the shifter. After about 10 minutes it came loose and almost sent it into my garage. Front and rear lockers both function as they should and I found $7.57 in change when I took the console out.

It doesnt engage anymore. You're supposed to split the case and replace the seals from the inside but if you're careful you can remove the actuator. It's just kind of a bitch to get lined up and I'm worried about timing it properly in reassembly, you can tear the new seal if your drag it over the gears. Seen a couple videos so should be OK.
