The ICON line is meant to be a cheaper alternative to tool truck brands like Snap-On and Matco. It's more for mechanics who plan on breaking their stuff from using it day in and day out.

Pic related is perfect for starting and often has a coupon that often brings it down to $350. Boxes are not actually necessary and you can start by throwing stuff in a tool bag until you get established.

Go to the store if one is near you (called Northern Tool in Canada) and pick up anything not included with the cheap Pittsburgh brand stuff. That brand has a lifetime warranty where you walk in the store and exchange with no questions asked.

If you can break the cheap shit then buy the more expensive tools because you clearly need the quality. If you can't break it you only saved money. It's a winning strategy anon and it's made me the money I live on today.

I didn't care about the counts. All the pieces in it make what I would consider a minimal wrenching kit...in a "box" as OP was demanding for some reason. They do have even cheaper sets but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone for anything serious.

Did you not have a father growing up? Jesus, dude. Just go buy a Craftsman toolset - one of the 450 piece ones for like $250 - and fill out the rest as you need shit. Having a core of half decent, cheap, and warrantied hand tools is the crux of any mechanic's setup. You spend big bucks on shit like impacts and compressors, not the everyday shit your bound to break.

With the exception of my Milwaulkee Impacts, my entire thousand or so tools in my box cost less than your 52 piece set.

M18 is an amazing tool, you are right.

I can also attest to the DeWalt DCF899. Used it as a cable installer driving 3' anchors into hard rocky clay. Can zip off a Honda axle nut or crank bolt no problem.

On the smaller side the DCF923 has proven really good for wheel wells and engine bays. Handles anything you'd use 3/8" drive for.

Nah not really. Milwaukee might have the best selection, and they’re a little ahead of the curve so like their flagship was the best for like 6mos and the others catch up. But now their current high torque is a few years old and DeWalt and some other brands actually beat it. If you already have Makita 18V, get one of theirs. Just make sure you go with a newer brushless model because the older brushed mid torques struggle on tight lug nuts and the newer brushless ones do almost every job you would want on passenger cars.

I have the TTI “Oops” 1/2” high torque, that time they accidentally made their mid-range brand’s 1/2” gun better than the flagship brand’s flagship 1/2” gun, so they came out with a new Ridgid high torque model like a year later that is weaker than the Milwaukee.

There were some steals while the Octane was around, like $250 with a max output 4.0 and charger. Ridgid is straight as long as you don’t need the giant Milwaukee collection, but sometimes you have to wait for the good tools. Like they have an 18V right angle impact wrench coming out this year, I might have to scoop that up, I’m wondering if it has more balls than the M12.

And a lot of Bahco stuff you find in Yurop is going to be Williams with a Bahco logo on it.

I have a hacksaw from a few years back that’s made in Sweden and the exact same design as Snap On and Bahco but it was painted black and gold and sold at Sears as Craftsman Professional.

There are a lot of jobs where even though you don’t need a lot of torque, they’re a pain in the ass with hand tools.

I had to drop a driveshaft like a week ago, 12x 5/16” heads bolts that were like 3”-4” long with fine threads and loctite. You can only access the one of the six on the very bottom at any given time, so the car needs to be in N to spin the shaft around. But if you have the car in N, it’s damn near impossible to break the bolts loose with the loctite and age, so if you wanted to do it struggling with a 1/4” drive ratchet, you would have to crack one bolt with the car in park, then get out from under the car, put the car in N, go back under and rotate the driveshaft 60deg, go back up to the driver’s door, put the car in park, get back under the car and break loose bolt #2, then put it back in N and repeat another 10 times.

But if you haven’t done anything beyond an oil change in your mom’s boyfriend’s driveway, power tools would be a bit much for you.

Only thing I would need is a deep socket set and other size ratchets maybe. Well, i guess also a torch and some kind of hydraulic press or electric saw to get the bushings replaced.

for working on your car you will ONLY need a 10, 12, 13, 16, 17 and 19mm socket and spanner. Thats it. Same for sockets. For screwdrivers you will ONLY ever use a large and small flat and phillips.
I do also have sets of each tool that cost hundreds each but they only come out in certain circumstances.

Have fun having to diassemble a bunch of bullshit to replace one part because you got a small $200 Jappo set instead of a huge $200 Gearwrench set with shallow and deep and extensions and multiple drive sizes and torx sockets.

Pic related was the bullshit required for 6 spark plugs because 2 cylinders were under the damn windshield and other cylinders had hoses and cables above the coils and plugs so you need the exact length of extension to swing a ratchef in that spot.

Buy an oil filter cap wrench and an extension for your ratchet, or buy oil filter pliers. Either option will be really cheap (under $20) and you'll be doing enough oil changes that it's worth it. It'll make your life a lot easier than some kinds of oil filter wrenches that are hard to use in enclosed spaces. Get some plastic Rhino Ramps or something, too, maybe. I have them and like them. You'll also want a funnel.

You don't actually need an oil filter wrench or other removal device at all, you can take them off by hand. You could change your oil with just that basic toolkit if you want, and I have.

The kits like pic related are great, and they go on sale for <$200 a lot, sometimes for 50% off, either at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Amazon. Kobalt, Husky, Gearwrench, and Craftsman all sell these big 3-4 drawer >200pc kits and they will have combination wrenches plus 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” drive. 3/8” drive becomes a pain in the ass when you start getting to rusty nuts and bolts larger than like 14mm.

no point buying shiny toons when the first ever oil change i did after 5 minutes i was dropping my shiny new sockets and ratchets on my driveway and got oill/rust on everything so its hopeless just buy something that is actually built for purpose and wont break, i got these socket adapters like 3/8 to 1/2 and i dont care if theyre bright pink or have "FAGGOT" etched into the side if they work they work

I painted the 8mm and 10mm on my 1/4” socket rail pink. Makes em easy to see and I can count off odd sizes. I’m about to do the same with 3/8” on the SAE I think.

Impacts are already easy because 19mm is so worn from lug nuts, and 3/8” deep is 19mm max so count down from there. But the shallows might need some pink paint too.
