Really? I've never owned a bike with ABS (oldfag) and I've never had an issue. I locked a rear and fish tailed once when someone pulled out in front of me but that's it. I'm half heartedly shopping for a new bike now and I'm looking for ABS only.

Bikes being too big for you is about more than just size. 650s are honestly fast as fuck, and aren't really suitable for most beginners in my opinion. You should really have a look at 400s/500s. The Kawi 400s are physically smaller than the Honda 500s but make similar power.

the only rider aid I really care about is ABS, TC and wheelie control are skill, and IMU stuff is helpful but also skill really (imu abs is cool if you go retard mode). No matter how "good" you are, if shit truly hits the fan you will slam the brakes or something in the road lessens traction just enough to ruin your day. Very worth it.

I'm leaning towards getting ABS because I live in Wisconsin, so even in July we're talking about 50 F(10c) at dawn. That's quite cold compared to the places most of you all ride, and the other thing is most of our roads are rural so they have gravel shoulders and that stuff gets deposited in the corners. If you're leaning hard on the front going into a corner and hit a few stones on the road it's easy to drop I'd imagine.

I recently switched from cruiser to ADV and knew the fairings/windshield would make a difference, but not nearly as much as it really does.

bikes are generally easier to work on than cars because smaller and simpler/more open geometry than cars, but setting up a bike right can be impossible if it's been crashed or fucked with. check the frame around the steering head for cracks, check the forks for true against a string or straightedge, generally inspect for crash/slide damage

Also I looked it up and the only people who claimed people were beating on the vehicle were the chink and his chink wife who had just tried to kill people and got btfo for it. It's because they tried to cheap out on materials costs by using smaller headlight housings for the LEDs. The only way this works is with like the MT-09 or MT-10 where it's just bare LED tubes without the pretense of a mirror housing.

Thanks to the anon that directed me back to the points

The points seem to have been the hangup, basically growing barnicals.
It's sparking now, albeit weakly.

I was going to start chasing corrosion elsewhere. I think it might actually run in it's current state, got a few odds and ends to resolve before I try anything else though.

The coil tested with resistance, didn't pay attention to the numbers, seemed good enough because I thought that was the problem for years. I'll retest the coil later if the condenser and a full battery doesn't straighten it out.
I've got a lot of work to do on it still, just about everything that could need work needs it.
