Always thought all schools in the UK did it desu, but maybe it varies from region to region a little bit.
At both my primary and secondary school we were divided into houses. Mostly it was for inter-school sports competitions, talent competitions, and merit/housepoint competitions. We also had "form" with the other members of our house, which is a class you have at the start of each day and immediately after lunch for registration and general updates.
Think it's typical for there to always just be 4 houses, but surely after I left my school they added a 5th one in, which upset the balance completely I reckon
