That's because it's very in vogue to hate furries.
It will blow over eventually, but for now the furry-hate is so "in" that if furries come up everyone has to pretend to hate them, lest they be targeted themselves.

As far as the OP, definition doesn't matter because a thing is furry or not furry based entirely on the opinion of the viewer. One person's bugs bunny is another person's furry.
