A DH supplement for Icelus would be awesome. I personally would like it to focus on the Ashlands, with an Ashlander nomad career and a campaign where acolytes lead the hives to investigate the disappearance of a caravan carrying information for their Inquisitor, leading up to an encounter with a Chaos-worshipping nomad leader.

The answer to this is in the history of Icelus.

Since the beginning of civilization on Icelus, the planet has been dominated by 3 ethnic groups. The Qulmaq, a nomadic culture that originated around what is now Hive Tertius, the Abayya, an agrarian civilization that was the first to invent crop rotation in the fertile equatorial belt, and the Tojani, a rival city-dwelling group. Though milennia have passed since that time, even now allegiance to the ancient cultures affect life in Icelus. It also affects the idiosyncratic culture of the Emperor's Nightmare chapter; since most recruits originate on Icelus, they keep their tribal allegiance when becoming Space Marines. The Tojani, with their proud army tradition, typically elect to join Dawn companies, while Qulmaq mystics frequently rise to the ranks of Nightmare chaplains.

Nightmares with a more nomadic bent might be from the lower halls of Quintus. Hell the current Master of the Fleet's family is probably still a solid player among the merchant houses of Hive Secundus

I'm pretty sure that's geologically implausible. In any case, there has to have been fertile regions somewhere on the planet before it became industrialized.

Wherever? Most Space Marine chapters recruit from several worlds. In any case, I intended to mention that any off-worlder joining the Nightmares will need to take on a tribal allegiance.

Kinda goes against the story Initiation, which implied the initiates are remolded in entirety.

The story only implies that they must leave their old life behind. But it emphasizes that the Marines mourn their old life. They see it as a great sacrifice to leave the life and soil of Icelus, as the crushing of the flower symbolizes. The story shows how the Nightmares venerate Icelus culture.

Ok, make it that they are predominantly selected for Dawn companies then. But I find it hard to believe the individual marine would have no say at all as regards to where he will be assigned.

Hive worlds are industrialized because the adeptus mechanus came in and paved over every inch of the planet and droppoed STC-approved colonies and factories.

The chapters that recruit from multiple worlds are either the ultramarines, who have their own little mini-empire, or fleet-based crusade chapters. Other than those two exceptions, most chapters have only one planet they recruit from.

We know Icelus was once covered in oceans. Hive Primus is built on what used to be a land bridge separating two bodies of water. Hive Quintus is built on top of a mountain that grew taller when the ocean around it dried up.

Icelus is now a wasteland, but that water had to go somewhere. How about we say that most of it is now bound up in the polar caps?

Additionally, the belt of mountains isn't a solid belt of back to back peaks. But a strip of mountains around the equator that are close enough and regular enough to be called a belt. There are mountains elsewhere of course.

Lastly, the only temperate areas left on the planet are tiny bands of land surrounding the tallest equatorial mountains. These are the only places outside of the poles where water condenses onto the cold mountain peaks and flows down to form small streams.

These are rare enough however that for all intents and purposes Icelus is still an arid wasteland.

Incorrect, you are thinking of forge worlds. Which are planet-sized factories. A hive world can be any kind of world. Only colonized by titantic factory-arcologies.

I forgot where this was detailed. But an initiate will serve as a scout alongside both companies. And once elevated to full marine he will also serve a stint in both companies to experience different doctrines.

Assignment by company done is at the command level, and all marines will accept orders without complaint. However the particular preferences, talents and skills of a marine will have a huge effect on where he ends up. Even if the choice is not specifically his to make.

Not quite. It would be more accurate to say that all but a handful of recruits are natives of Icelus.

The few exceptions are psyker candidates brought from all over the Imperium to attend the Scolastica Psykana at Hive Tertius. The Nightmares work very closely with this school and suitable candidates are often selected to participate in the trials. If successful they become initiates, and then members of the Librarium.

in most stories they just come of as weird.

The Nightmares aren't batman-scary, they make no real effort to be, but they're very passively freaky. Their strange mannerisms, complete with their very pale faces and tired, bloodshot eyes inspires a sense of disquiet.

Lets think about what we know so far:
1. The history of Icelus dates back to the Heresy, so some 10 millenia or so.
2. The Nightmares have only been around for about 2000 years.
3. There are only 5 hives on the entire planet, and Icelus is considered a baby compared to most hive worlds.

Therefore:
1. The climate change that made the seas dry up happened long before human colonization. And at one point it was a temperate world. 5 hives alone, although host to almost 40 billion people are not enough to cause such climate change in that amount of time.
2. Icelus must have faced some strife in its history, but when the nightmare arrived all that interhive rivalry dissipated.
3. The wasteland that covers Icelus is either arid flatlands, dried up seabed, arid tundra or polar glacier. Tiny temperate zones exist around a couple mountains where surface water can be found. These house the only settled culture on Icelus outside of the hives. Everyone else is either nomads or caravan-traders.

That's not what a wasteland is though! That's just alot of unusable empty space. No different from the Utah Salt Flats, or Central Greenland.

The way a wasteland is described in Rites of Battle implies absolute devastation the likes of which have never existed on Earth.

This is intentional. Nightmares are not scary in the traditional "iwilleatyourskull" sense. But every fibre of them just screams "unnerving". This applies in combat, but even more so in social interactions.

Well how do you define special? There is a difference between "unique" and "rich". Make them too unique and you end up with snowflake marines riding fire breathing dragons. Or mechanical wolves...

The vast majority of our unique TT units fit the fluff. Devastator Dreads because they don't use regular marines. Nightkin are essentially Sternguard/Vanguard veterans deployed as scouts. Sleepless are the Death Company. Libby dreads are nothing new. Etc.

Where the unique really shines is in the history and traditions of the chapter.

Fallout is a post apocalyptic setting. Don't drink from puddles of clean water. Its only clean because it is radiated as all hell and not even bacteria can survive in it.

Icelus is different. Few plants grow in the desert because there is no liquid water, and little to no vapour in the air. Not because the whole planet is a poisoned deathworld.

Right. Think of the moon. Now think of Las Vegas. See the difference? Las Vegas is like Icelus, barren, but just being there won't kill you.

Then again have you seen most of Nevada? Not so different from the moon. I mean how much food do they grow in Las Vegas? That sushi is not local I'll tell you that much. Put a bubble up around the city like they did in the Simpsons and see how long they last.

I have no doubt that every hive (with the exception of Quintus, which is a garden) will have a permanent cloud of toxic fumes around it. But since there are only 4 polluting hives, the toxic zones are nowhere near enough to cover the whole planet.

Any location far enough away from a hive that it dissipates over the horizon would have little to no pollution.

There was something posted about the Sleepless a couple threads back. IIRC it was Eidelan talking to someone about the Sleepless not being traitors. I'd be very grateful if someone could find it as it was too short to be added to the wiki.

We should start collecting these smaller quotes to fill out the Forces of the EN page in the codex. The TT list is looking quite bloated in terms of length. But I think this is because all of the special rules are written there instead of elsewhere in the codex.

Why wouldn't it? 40 Billion is alot of people producing alot of pollution. And who says there aren't dumping grounds for particularly hazardous wastes from starship weaponry manufacturing out in the plains between the central mountain range and the poles.

Yes, but keep in mind there is still only 5 hives on the entire planet and ALL of them are in the southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere is likely untouched, thought just as arid. The simple fact that Icelus still HAS temperate zones unlike 99.999999% of planets would make the population want to keep them pristine.

That said you raise a good point. Primus is a factory, so waste probably gets dumped into the two huge pits flanking it which used to be oceans. This only adds to the defensive position of the hive. Secundus is a starport, not really a factory. So not much dumping, but lots of fumes. Same with Tertius.

Quartus is by far the most polluting of all the hives as they handle heavy industry. But they probably dump the really nasty stuff into the lava flow. Apart from that its a giant chimney in the ground so most waste is likely buried in empty mine shafts.

Well its a clear dome kilometers wide. They have plenty of room for wheat fields and flower gardens. I'm sure they would produce some waste, but not anything like the radioactive sludge you're probably thinking of.

We're fucking up our own planet pretty good already at only 6 billion and a couple hundred years. Thousands of years would not exactly help.

That said, I don't think everywhere would be ruined, I just think there'd be a LOT of co2 in the atmosphere and most places would be unbearably hot. Some flora and fauna would adapt and flourish, but much would die out.

This also lets us have lots of "lost in the desert, dying of thirst" style stories. Mirages, dream-like thirst hallucinations, Brother Marco shouting his own name to find his way back to the scout company... whatever.

But I think both extremes of climate, the "nuclear fallout super-warzone wasteland of DOOOOM" and the "untouched paradise" are unlikely and slightly counter to our established fluff.

The landscape would be largely inhospitable, and the wasteland part comes from the thousands of broken down cars and trucks that litter the desert, but there are small, downright beautiful oasis here and there if you know where to look, and the nomads know where to look.

I was thinking more than just CO2. i was thinking the heavy lead-based arisoles and corrosive sulfur compounds. We may worry about CO2 in terms of greenhouse gases and global warming and such, but keep in mind that prior to the invention of the catalytic converter, the fumes we were pumping out just from car exhaust were thousands of times worse than any kind of pollutant produced today. And I seriously doubt that such a device, whose purpose is entirely environmental would be in use in the imperium.

Aye. CO2 was just a single example. I totally agree. Even if some (or most) imperial vehicles had such devices there would be lots of additional pollutants from the fires of industry. One way or another Icelus is a fairly polluted planet, with lots of unnatural chemical compounds in the air, water and soil.

But it's merely "largely inhospitable" which by Imperial standards is actually a fairly nice place.

It's not like Armagedeon or Cadia where the entire planet is now either fortified hives or a thousand year old warzone. There are plenty of wrecks in the desert but they're rusted civilian transports, not centuries old daemonically possessed predators rigged to explode by the Iron Warriors themselves. It's not a "wasteland" in the way we often think of them in 40k. I see the planet's condition as being mostly from industry. It simply dried up the oceans as the atmosphere was clogged with strange chemicals and the planet baked, the water condensing to the poles.

On that note, the nomad communities that live in the northern hemesphere far enough up that they have steady access to frozen water instead of having to search for it, building mines and wells or living by an oasis like the southern nomads. What are the notherners like? Inuit have some pretty cool legends too that we could play off of.

The northern hemisphere is largely untouched geologically, but the fast winds coming off the arid and desolate central regions of the planet spread the vast clouds of pollutants and air-based toxins even to these regions. While it's far worse in and around the hives, no where on the planet except possibly in the underground tunnels connecting the hives would it be safe to travel without a gas mask.

There WAS a sixth hive under construction in the northern hemisphere thousands of years ago, but for some...reason (we can discuss) it was never finished and left abandoned, large pieces of the partially constructed hive have kept the nomads of the northern hemisphere alive, but due to the fact the hive has grown to be home to some of the largest and most dangerous predators on Icelus keeps the nomads from remaining around the possibly haunted hive.

Small areas where freak weather patterns or geological formations or what have you have kept tiny patches of land largely free of chemicals and polutants, allowing flora and fauna to flourish. I think these rare places would have a lot of meaning in Icelus culture and to the nomadic shamans in particular. Most hive dwelling people probably wouldn't know where any actually ARE but there would be children's stories about getting lost in the ash wastes and finding a magical garden, cautionary tales of men seeing mirages of lush greenery of enchanting beauty and chasing after them unendingly only to die of thirst and so on.

But I like the nomads being self-sufficient. Making them dependent on any of the hive tech feels wrong.

A friend of mine once told me a story about an old inuit man whose town, along with its buildings and everything in them, was forcibly relocated by dogsled and truck one night, the populace simply being told to follow if they wanted to survive.

The old man refused to go and told the drivers as such. This land was his home and he would not leave it. Laughing, they bade him stay, convinced he would die in the cold and trouble them no further.

So the man --now with nothing to his name but the meager clothes on his back-- strolled away from the group of drivers before crouching behind one of the trucks of the caravan and promptly defecating. At -35 before windchill the feces froze quickly but not before the old man had deftly sculpted it into a makeshift knife.

Minutes later he had stolen two dogs, fashioned one's bones and guts into a sled, dogwhip and harness and was towed out into the night by the other.

I don't know or care if that story is true or not but that is what our northerners should be like. They don't give a shit about the hive folk and their ideas. I mean you just know that old man is going to be fine. He doesn't give a fuck about a stupid house. It's only -35 Celsius outside!

The story is very nice and had a good feel to it. i'm just wondeirng how we can fit it in around the exiled Redemptionist sect bloodline that forms a good chunk of the nomads in present day.

Planetary Governor Maximillion Escidia

A bright-eyed man on the cusp of old age, Lord Maximillion is the latest in a long line of Planetary Governors sitting within the Violet Sanctuary, Maximillion is a merry, charismatic and free-spirited individual who has governed the hives fairly and proficiently. Not content to be, as he saw it, another in a line of figurehead rulers, Maximillion enlisted in the PDF and later in one of Icelus' voluntary Imperial Guard regiments where he underwent a long and gruelling tour of duty before he was recalled by the Adeptus Terra to serve in his capacity as Governor.

Though he is a progressive and morally straight man, always ready to treat his subordinates as equals and showing a proper humble respect for his superiors, his generosity does not extend to the nomads beyond the walls of the Hives he rules. Having fought against many heretical rebels and assorted scum, Maximillion holds a burning contempt in his heart for the wanderers, who he sees as verminous offspring of zealots and traitors. Under his rule crackdowns upon bandit groups and nomadic tribes have become more harsh, and it is said that if Maximillion has one goal in the remainder of his life, it is to see all life outside the hives eradicated.

Also, if the artists are around and amicable, we haven't really worked out what a darkfire flare rifle looks like. For statistical reference:
Darkfire Flare Rifle
Class: Basic Range: 125 m RoF: 1/2/- Dmg: 2d10+4E Pen: 0 Clip: 18 Rld: Full Special: Accurate, Toxic Wt: 16 Req: 20 Renown: Distinguished*

A Darkfire Flare Rifle lights its target, marking them as a priority and denying them the cover of darkness. Any enemy struck by a darkfire round, regardless of whether he took damage, gives off bright light for 1d10 rounds, preventing him from gaining any sort of bonus from dark-based obscurement and imposing a -30 to Concealment tests. This is even more deadly when the astartes work in tandem--if they are in Squad Mode with the battle brother who fired the flare, all members of the Kill-Team can reroll all ballistic skill tests to hit the target.

*An Emperor's Nightmare can opt to requisition this weapon at Respected Renown rating, but only in lieu of his primary weapon for that mission. He may still use points to requisition another, or simply use his bolt pistol.

I've just been informed about what the Sleepless look like, and I'll start work on those. Will be a pain and I may have to take some liberties on them, I think instead of just the trim being turned white I may have to do the feet and backpack as well, which would be just as well given the fluff.

If you look in the My Documents/MyGames there should be a retribution file with a folder for badges. I'm actually using the thumbnail of the most recent nightmare emblem as the actual one is too large. I think it turned out well.

I asked for the Owlglass. If it's reversible with a second side, I asked for the chapter banner on that side.
I almost went with a symbol for the Sleepless (being an incurable lifetime insomniac), but I figured if I'm going to wear the emblem, it should be the chapter main.

In all seriousness though, I dislike the current setup for sleepless. As far as I know the icon is changed and the trim of the pauldrons are white. Is there any objection to me taking a bit of creative liberty on that? Because I have an idea.

I think the repainting of Sleepless armour is more about the symbolism of the colour white being applied, showing their connection to the apothecarion, rather than IT MUST BE ON YOUR PAULDRON TRIM BECAUSE PALDRONS

So as long as some white is going on their armour where it goes is a secondary concern.

...Maybe brothers of increasing lunacy have more stark white armor? Hypothetically one could eventually live a full century (or some arbitrary mark) after his Sleepless insanity reaches the dangerous level, and have pure stark-white armor. But none has lived long enough yet.
This also serves as a color warning for the Phobetors, who can tell at a glance how old (and thus how canny) a given Sleepless might be.

As for painting, perhaps they leave the paint for the Sleepless and surreptitiously damage the paint jobs so they go to fix it by rote, or while they're sedated (as much as they can be), they paint the armor for them.

I still don't know...i like the idea that thy can track how far alot a Sleepless is (Though there is something to be said about the uncertainty in not being sure if they've completely snapped, a nice throwback to 1800's psychiatric treatments) But it still seems it would be extremely difficult to do, especially on those Sleepless who simply started hallucinating and attacking everything in sight instead of trying to keep their mind occupied.

Just another point against the progressive white color scheme.

Simply put, the marines don't need it. If a Sleepless has progressed further along than the others, you'll know it almost immediately! Not to mention, I have enough faith in the apothecaries and phobetor dreads to be able to recognize a particular sleepless from his actions and his progress, considering they spend a tremendous amount of time with them.
And even if they don't, all Sleepless should be treated as if they could go on a rampage at any moment, not just those who happen to have more white on them.

Look everyone loves Sandman. It's a cool tale. But shoehorning it into another story just because they each involve dreams does a disservice to both.

As always, looks good. Fur pelts or something makes me think he's from somewhere a bit colder rather than an ash wastes nomad. Perhaps a northerner.

As an aside, I like the idea of wide brimmed oriental style ^ hats to complement the birdlike gas masks. Shade would be important for survival during the day depending on where you are. (which also adds to the heavy reliance on vehicles)

I'm going to argue the point just because Space Marines can and do tell the Imperium to stuff it. Space Marines take very good care of their homeworlds. Not only because they live there, and no smart person sets fire to their home. But also because that is where their recruits come from.

This is explained in high detail in the Deathwatch books. If marines prize feral warrior recruits, they will artificially hold a society in statis to produce such youth. On Icelus they prize guile more than raw savagery. This is why the trial is set up as a test of wits and determination. It would be pretty hard for the trials to take place in its current incarnation if Icelus was a polluted shithole of a hive world like Necromunda.

40k is already full of crapsack worlds. We don't need to make Icelus one of them.

Frankly, I love it!

The northern hemisphere is pretty much untouched, and the mountain belt (which is particularly dense north of Hive Primus where Secundus and Tertius are located) blocks almost all of the pollution thanks to rebounding air currents.

I'm picturing different societies living in each area of Icelus. The southern lands where the Hives sit. The equatorial mountains. The northern desert, and the north polar ice cap.

The northern Nomads are descendants of the aborted hive. The "native people" of Icelus live in the few oases of liveable land in the mountain belt. The southern Nomads are descendants of hivers. The Raiders are Redemptionists and people who have been exiled from the hives. And there are also huge groups of Caravan Traders who traffic between the hives.

Anything I missed? Oh and the hivers are a culture unto themselves as well.

Pretty much everyone but the raiders contribute aspirants to the Nightmares.

This is the complete opposite of what was posted. The pollution is brought into the northern hemisphere specifically because of the air currents, obviously it's not as concentrated, but it still means all nomads require gas masks almost at all times.

Maybe, it really hasn't been decided what to do with the sixth hive. It's a logical option though.

A lot of chapter serfs who spend time between the hives on Chapter business (like, perhaps, ferrying recruits from other hives to Primus) have their lungs augmented and filtered with bionics. I'd imagine while most of the wildlife has no trouble surviving in the toxic fumes, they don't necessarily like it, and so any "safe spot" is made dangerous by packs of large land predators looking for a place to stay.

Hmm, traditionally Librarians always wear blue. Chapter colours are limited to the shoulders and whatever trappings and trim he also carries. (like a tabard)

In fact we don't know what the Librarians look like at all. We know Apothecaries are the regular white. Techmarines are all mostly rust red. And Chaplains are black and look like bird shamans.

I'll get back to ya later on this one, I'm slowly building a unified image in my head of the chapter colour scheme.

The markings are supposed to be subtle and symbolic. The hourglass represents the passage of time cycle of waking and sleep. When the sand runs out the glass is flipped, and the cycle proceeds. For Sleepless, the hourglass is replaced by the infinity symbol, indicating that their time has run out, and the cycle will never change.

The shoulder trim is meant to show that they are from this point on under the care of the apothecarion.

Also, how are hives laid out? I always figured hives were just sort of massive city-spires, open to the environment around them. Would they have giant oxygen scrubber facilities in the underhive that keep the surrounding air (the very most of it, not more than a half mile out) clean and breathable? Would they be bubble-domed cities cut off and in artificial atmosphere? Would there be massive underground pumps that shunt all the smoke out and release in colossal vents kilometers away?

I like the open-to-outside air and/or channel pollution out to exterior vents things. Either presents a hell of a target for saboteurs and would make an excellent plot point in Dark Heresy.

Hive Cities are mentioned as having Atmospheric Shields that can double up as planetary defense systems, but not as effective as Void Shields in that regard in several of the Gaunt's Ghosts books. You can go that way I guess.

Blood red skies, oil rainbows on rainy tar, those massive cargo ship graveyards, strange purple clouds, as well as all manner of weird light refraction, pigmentation of the landscape and so on from experimental chemicals. Maybe some particularly dangerous chemical clouds will have other effects but they're only really found around the factories. Leave it simple.

So you would have me believe that Icelus is so polluted that anywhere on the planet the air can kill you? What was the point of setting up a chapter of space marines here again? The location is nice I guess. The factories are convenient. But wait a second, EVERYONE on the planet is dying of lung cancer? Lets move on...

The Nightmares prize intelligence and cunning. By that logic they want recruits who are adapted to the wastes and know how to survive and thrive in difficult environments. NOT the ability to figure out how to find replacement gas mask filters at the north pole.

There is a happy middle ground here, we just have to evenly balance things. Icelus is not a paradise, but if you how you can live and thrive, even outside of the hives. At the same time its not an easy place to live, with many dangers both natural and man made.

Primus bolt pistols would be loaded with tracer rounds that burn like miniature stars and are modified to detonate with a loud thunderclap. They also use more tracers in general for rapid fire weapons like heavy bolters.

Secundus on the other hand would not use tracer rounds at all in any weapon.

I think everyone needs a quick lesson on the types of gas masks

mechanical filtration: in which the air is passed through a filter material. This is like the attatched pic. Most of the nomads and such living in the wastes are going to end up having this type ranging down to simply covering their mouths with a cloth.

Chemical Filtration: uses chemicals to neutralize or otherwise bind pollutants/contaminatns/whatmayhaveyou so you don't breathe them in. These would be the most common among hivers since most of the time activated charcoal or resins taken from the flora of the wastes will suffice to filter out the worst of it.

The purpose of this type of respirator is to take air that is contaminated with one or more types of pollutants, remove a sufficient quantity of those pollutants and then supply the air to the user. There are different units for different environments. The units consist of a powered fan which forces incoming air through one or more filters for delivery to the user for breathing. The fan and filters may be carried by the user or with some units the air is fed to the user via tubing while the fan and filters are remotely mounted.

Powered air-purifying respirators basicly take fans and the above methods to put more throughly clean the air.

Lasty, you have rebreathers and SCUBA gear which you breathe stored pure air. Combine that with a powered filter and you can go ever longer.

There are a LOT of kinds of specialist ammunition. Regular sternguard also use a lot of ammo types that they don't have rules for. No reason ours wouldn't too. It may not be standard equipment every mission but there's no reason they couldn't have it in the armoury. I say go for it.

The reason I thought of them using the rounds in bolt pistols is that assault marines tend to range ahead of everyone else. When they fire these flares at the enemy it serves to direct fire from tactical marines and vehicles. Even if the rounds themselves are otherwise ineffective at long range. Load them into a storm bolter for double the fun.

A heavy bolter loaded with a couple thousand of these would be terrifying. Just imagine being able to watch the stream of bullets as the weapon is slowly tracked towards you're position. It would cause pinning, to say the least :D

And it's a competition that would naturally evolve. I mean upwards of half the planet is now salt flats now that the oceans are gone. They need to be traversed quickly. People are competitive by nature. They race. Eventually there are more formal and even organized races.

Okay here is a rough hazard scale on Icelus:

Scale:
0-1: Pristine. The air is effectively untainted or the level of exposure is so low as to have no ill effects over a single lifespan.
2-3: Fact of life. The air contains some contaminants, which are concentrated in "hotspots". (like dust storms). Otherwise fairly benign.
4-5: Toxic. With no protection the air will cause illness, worsening over time.
6-7: Industrial Hazard: A highly toxic zone where exposure can kill in a matter of hours or days.
8-9: Death Zone. Without full protective gear such as a sealed hazmat suit or power armour. A person will be killed within minutes or seconds.
10: Instantly Fatal: Such zones are thankfully quite rare on Icelus but form the majority of its natural hazards. Lava flows, pools of acid, craters full of heavy toxic gasses etc. Only a space marine could survive in such places, and with significant difficulty.

I'll try to draft a little of the geography on Icelus tomorrow, using this scale as a reference. We could also make a list of the various protective measures, who uses them and where.

So holy smokes, GorkaMorka rules actually fit really well for ash wastes skirmishes. All models are required to have a transport, which fits with the techno-shamanic nomads needing their vehicles for protection from the elements and the ork profile can easily be explained by bionic augmentation.

I am going to convert a couple convoys of rival nomads and have them fight for scrap metal and race to find newly abandoned wrecks on the salt flats.

Since Chaplain/Techmarine dreadnoughts don't exist in the crunch, we can slot them in by replacing the Night Owl and Apothecary Venerable Dreadnought specialities with 0-1 Techmarine and 0-1 chaplain upgrades.

Techmarine - Gain Blessing of the Omnisiiah and a servo-harness

Chaplain - Liturgies of battle for the dread and any nightmares in the same combat.

It doesn't further bloat the codex, it just replaces 2 choices with 2 different choices which give a little more choice.

I'll have to head out for now, feel free to mull over/tear down the thought to your leisure.

As I understand it all the companies are fully trained tactical marines (new fluff tactical marines that is: The super elite ones who have both devastator and assault training already) and they keep equipment like bikes and jump packs in the general armoury alongside chainswords and other weapons of war to be selected on a mission by mission basis.

Another thing: There must be secure transport routes between the hives. Communication and trade can't depend solely on caravans that risk being raided and butchered. How does food, for instance, reach the other hives from that one agricultural hive? I suggest underground or overground rail lines (maybe both).

Also, the fact that hives communicate via underground tunnels means that there isn't really an "underhive" as such, since the entrance ways into the tunnels must be secured, and trading posts would naturally spring up around tunnel access points.

Another thing: wearing gas masks inside the hive should serve an ornamental/ceremonial purpose only.

Agreed, but I don't think it's actually like that. The dreads are like the sleepless. They're not actually that common but we love talking about them so they're overrepresented in the fluff, giving the wrong impression of their numbers. We do have a lot of dreads, and a lot of icelus dreads besides that, but not actually any more than some other chapters have of dreads and terminators.

And all tactical marines is actually a really codex thing to do. The Howling Griffons are like that too IIRC (also a quartered scheme)

We're actually a really, really codex chapter. We have very few divergences if you don't count the large company sizes and various other mechanisms we use to cope with the catalpsean node mutation. Dreads even have by the book codex devastator markings.

That's one of the things I love about the nightmares. They have duality all over the place. In this case it's their rational, calm nature on an individual level juxtaposed with their reverence of tradition and old ways on an organizational level.

The Transcontinental Rail Guilds of Icelus are the source of power and wealth for many noble families. Barons vye for lucrative lines in a constant low-level struggle that at times erupts into open warfare between mercenary armies. Sabotage and assassinations are common, but to be a rail baron in Icelus is to be one of the very elite.

The most famous rail baron, Thernicus van Avel, held the vital Quintus-Primus line for over 65 years. All attempts by rival guild members to muscle in on his territory were repelled, sometimes with honeyed words, sometimes with brute strength. Finally, the opposing families joined in an alliance and simply built an alternate rail line along the same route. van Avel didn't take kindly to this, of course, and battles between armored trains on the two lines became so frequent that Primus hive was left starving. Finally, the Emperor's Nightmares themselves had to intervene, putting an end to the hostilities by disarming both sides.

The Icelus dreadnought IS the pre-heresy dreadnought. It's this dreadnought right here. Most chapters don't use them anymore because they have the mark IVs instead but a group of Nightmare techmarines revisited the design because it was a lighter chassis than the MKIV to base a stealth loadout on. From there they added a variety of other ad-mech approved technology (technology that all marine chapters do indeed have access to) and called it a day. What is important isn't the pattern of dread --as they had already existed for literally thousands and thousands of years-- What's important is the level of craftsmanship that goes into each individual part of the Icelus. The careful joint fabrication, the smelting of rare metals and so on, making it as light and flexible as possible.

I'm sure the Salamanders and the Iron Hands could make an Icelus pattern with ease but some other chapters may not have the facilities or the skills required. The Nightmares made sure the recommended modifications are freely available to the admech and their brother space marines but they don't have time to make them for them too.

Frankly in the scale of things the Icelus is even less revolutionary than the Space Wolves "inventing" the predator annihilator by strapping lascannons to the turret.

If you happen to belong to the more common folk, well, the Grade 2 - 5 cars are for you. Double- or triple-tiered, packed with passengers, but not without its comforts. Food vendors sell corpse starch snacks in the aisles, and the more wealthy can even afford private compartments and to dine in restaurant cars. Security is usually left to the individual passenger, so bring your own gun in case raiders board the train!

For those unfortunate souls that belong to the dregs of hive humanity, and ashlander nomads who wish to use the trains to relocate, a stowaway spot in the great freight trains is the only option. At times, these hitchhikers can be press-ganged into impromptu defense teams to protect the shipments from bandit attacks.

Really? 'Cause I dare you to find a source for that.

Pretty sure a chaplain dread is just what happens when a chaplain is the hero who gets put in a dreadnought. Then they paint it black and decorate it with bones but they might as well be applying glitter for all the difference it makes to what the dreadnought fundamentally is. A dreadnought is still just a dreadnought if you stick a servo arm on it.

The other devil's advocate argument would be that "dreadnoughts are like, our thing, man" and to compensate we have very few terminators. I'd like to have lots of terminators but hey, we don't get 'em. Dreads are our special snowflake thing but I think we did a pretty good job of keeping it grounded. We don't really have any more than other chapters (not counting iceluses which are more like our terminator stand in anyway). We have the forges for it, we have lots of trade and import minerals and special materials constantly to sustain it and we are steeped in tradition so we insist that everything be an STC and/or sanctioned by the adeptus mechanicus.

When a mighty techmarine hero falls in battle and you put him in a dreadnought do you then tell that newly created walking tank "sorry, I know we could just plug a servo arm into that port RIGHT THERE and let you continue to do what you're good at: repairing tanks on the battlefield while murdering aliens but we'd rather you just murder aliens and forget you were ever a techmarine" No! You put on a servo arm and paint him red. It's hardly unique technology.

The Nightmares Phobetor dreadnoughts are a little unique, but c'mon there's only six of them and there's a very good reason for their existence.

I get what you're saying and it's reasonable enough. It's just that if this technology is so common and accessible (and I agree that it should be), then why don't other chapters have apothecary/techmarine/chaplain dreads in the codices? Salamanders, for instance have excellent forge technology, why don't they have them on the tabletop?

I think there's some confusion between 'within the hive' and 'within a building' within a building, almost anywhere in the hive except for the lowest levels, you can go without a mask at all. Outside of a building but still within a hive requires a rebreather to prevent long-term exposure, but unless you're right next to a heavy pollutant factory or processing plant, you're not going to die anytime soon without a mask (though certainly quicker than others around you) The area outside the hives, basically the entire southern hemisphere, would require gas masks at all times, as it's easily the most polluted region of the planet. The Northern hemisphere I'd imagine to be equivalent to being inside the hive but not in a building.

The racing seems a little too crazy. Pod racing was always the stupidest thing about tatooine.

Specialist dreadnoughts aren't actually very special. They just mean that someone else earned that particular sarcophagus rather than a veteran sergeant or captain.

And no, most chapters don't have rules for them in their codices, that's why Forge World gave us rules for them along with models. Tabletop rules should never be involved in debates over fluff though. The two rarely overlap.

Ah. I personally don't think we should get special snowflake rules for techmarine dreads or chaplain dreads. They don't need 'em. That's a fluff and modelling thing. Same as it should be for other chapters really, unless you feel like using the forge world rules.

Phobetors make a bit of sense having a special profile though, given what they are.

But if your point is "don't make rules for special dreadnoughts in a homebrew codex because your homebrew rules aren't already in every other marine codex" then I must confess myself thoroughly confused.

really I see salt flats races of all types as a common, if not THAT common, part of Icelus culture in general. There are a couple official yearly ones that the hives get involved in, there are a couple entertainment broadcasts that feature them and so on. Then there are spire kids looking for a good time, techno-shamans trying to achieve communion with the Emperor by going 88 miles per hour and everything in between.

When you have two thousand years to figure out what to do with a planet of salt flats, you figure something out to bond as a culture over your sad little hunk of space rock or you go mad.

As to survival, well a lot of money can be made betting on a rigged race. This is a culture of illusionists having a competition in an environment famous for its mirages after all.

By no means would all or even most nomads involve themselves heavily in races. But certainly no less than any other part of Icelus' population. It would be something the nomads left to their youth. A way to unwind when you're surrounded on all sides by endless, flat earth as far as the eye can see.

This is just me personally but I'd say "I live in a hive" is already sufficiently grimdark for the average citizen. Plus quite a large number of them really do manufacture shells all day as you say. These loyal servants of the Imperium deserve to unwind after their 26 hour day by drinking a cold alcoholic beverage brewed from oil and fermented piss and watching two men surgically implanted into cars try to kill eachother in a desert over the pict-relay.

They earned it.

Also, I remember something from a Clancy novel we can crib.
Instead of every hundred or however-many rounds, every fifth round is a tracer. The result is, visually, a never-ending stream of blazing light, like you were firing a continuous-burn laser. Not so good for concealing your location. Pretty damn great for making your opponent wet himself.
I imagine their vehicle weapon mounts and any heavy rapid fire weapons (asscans, anyone?) have sodium tracer slugs.

Forms of racing on Icelus:

Ashlander proving races - traditional ways for nomad tribes to determine supremacy and territorial rights. The winning tribe gets use of the good land until the next proving.

Hive noble races: frequently, 2nd sons/daughters get bored with dicking around with hive politics and elect to go out into the desert and drive very fast groundcars. Usually the races are driven along the comparatively secure rail lines, rather than the deep desert.

Gladiatorial death races: An alternative to penal legions or servitorization, criminals are strapped into cars and forced to race each other for the entertainment of the midhive populace. Inter-hive racing tournaments are a big event in Icelus, and popular racers may win fame (though not freedom).

They'd still do it among themselves though. I mean, most of the nomad tribes are at least semi-mechanized and at some point they'd have to want to compete with each other. Boys will be boys even in the grim darkness of the forty-first millenium.

I can also see spire kids trying to sneak into the illegal (because of nomad hate rather than any practical reason) informal races that the nomads hold now and then when they gather or bump into eachother. I'm picturing burning man meets nascar but with more fatalities.

Most other chapters follow the codex astartes which is a lot more balanced out and less dreadnought oriented.

The Nightmares don't seem to follow the codex.

Anyway have we decided on whether the Nightmares have any grudges against anyone. I mean their homeworld looks like a prime bit of real estate, odds are someone tried to take it from them at some point.

Maybe Dark Eldar? The place to them must seem so twisted for them it would be a paradise.

The local arbites will probably be called to deal with most of it, and only if they run into a massive criminal organization will they call the pdf for support. In those cases, they will probably hunt down, and surround the ringleaders of said organization, with the PDF around as a show of how far they are willing to go to arrest/kill them.

And they may carry more unconventional equipment, seeing as how you can't really use a shock maul on a racer without some damaging results.

Alpha Legion and Tzeentchian warbands are also problems from time to time, with the former sending infiltrators that thankfully got caught early on. That's one of the reasons the Chapter's been taking a heavy-handed approach in recent centuries- they don't want another Swords of the Emperor to happen to themselves.

Orks would probably be the best, unless we want to come up with a minor xenos coming out of the Veiled Region. That actually worked really well to give character to the chapters in the Badab war books.

Splinter fleets works alot better especially in the wake of Hivefleet Leviathan.

I think someone mentioned that the Orks set foot on Icelus at some point within the last 2000 years. It didn't end well for them however, because at the time most of the fleet and all 4 Primus companies were nearby (but not at home).

- The ork ships in orbit tried to board the space station. But were stonewalled by the fleet around the Star of Dreams and the flagship counterattacked and boarded by the Lucidity. The rest of the ork ships were taken by surprise as the other 5 strike cruisers emerged from the warp and the orks were wiped out.
- On the ground the orks landed within sight of Hive Primus but were not able to get around the giant acid pool on that side of the hive. Long before they could make it to either land bridge to get into the hive, the PDF pounced on them. The Orks were penned in by strafing runs and eventually caught in a pincer by armoured units from both exits of the hive.
- Thanks to the close ties with the Ordo Xenos the Nightmares were well aware of the Orks tendency to reproduce by spore. Every corpse was burned and the area was turned to glass by orbital lance bombardment.

This gives Icelus and its PDF a history with the orks. The Nightmares themselves no doubt have all sorts of battlefield experience.

The mass lance bombardment is still remembered today as "the wrath of heaven" by the local Nomads who could see and hear the strike from great distances.

They weren't made, just a natural evolution of the larger species of predators. And probably none at all considering the local wildlife isn't exactly seen as the most majestic of creatures worthy of being in an astartes iconography.

Also, killing an owlbear during your initiation is seen as a sign of strength. They often attack initiates/rangers after they leave the hive...

Yeah most of the Icelus PDF is geared to defending the Hive against ground assault. So they have everything a normal imperial guard regiment has. Backed up with massive numbers of aircraft.

Given the Schola Psykana on the planet, they probably have more than a few sanctioned psykers. And less of the usual "HE MIGHT EXPLODE" stigma associated with them.

The one thing the PDF tends to lack however is artillery. They likely have a few basilisks and manticores, but far less than usual. Mostly they rely on the static defenses of the hive.

The new codex stormtrooper look 9 kinds of HERP DERP MAH GOOGLY EYES. But the helmet is still the right shape for a skull, particularly an Owl skull. Or a long-beaked Raven skull.

The regular guard tends to wear that instead of their flak armour. The stormtrooper wear carapace armour instead. The stormtroopers are still purple and yellow of course.

In fact the stormtroopers probably look even more peacock than the rest of them. Just imagine carapace plates with feathers moulded into them. The feathers are coloured purple/yellow in checkered diamonds.

They do wear the armour, but its under a voluminous puffy swiss guard outfit. Since they also tend to wear masks, telling gender apart without relying on voice is nearly impossible.
