Anyway, as /tg/ is fairly liberal in their tolerance for video games, would running a league of legends quest be okay?

The MC would be a new champion, though not initially. Would probably give it 3 threads to actually get accepted into the League as to allow the players to decide an origin, motivation and skill set.

Two things.

A. DotA and LoL are two of the most cancerous, asshole communities that ever existed in all of gaming history.

B. On the other hand, a Quest where you use some of the lore, characters and powers may have potential, as long as you ignore anything game related in terms of balance.

And make it clear you're doing so. YOU decide who's more powerful and shit. Not LoL.

B. Yeah that's the plan. Was thinking DotA 2 quest, but the lore's a bit strange, and the majority of heroes lack a defined personality outside of puns. Not even one-dimensional, moreso single-point. i fucking swear to god if i hear OD talk about flying or updrafts ONE MORE TIME Fun game, though.

LoL, on the other hand, has scare but connected lore I can easily whip up into a quest, and champions have fairly one-dimensional personalities I can work with.

Hell, the problem with running any Quest in a established setting is the hardcore fans it might attract.

That's why I always prefer to pull the old "It's in this setting, but this is different..." thing.

I'm afraid you don't know the meaning of the term 'Collective Game'...

But like I said. Long as you avoid the game heavy stuff, like balance and shit, it should be fine. Just, you know, make it clear that game stats don't mean shit. Your say is what decides shit. Important for quests like this.

You could always just do an inspired-by setting. When you get down to it, Afro Sammy was just Feudal Japan with high tech nonsense sprinkled in and the whole thing held together by nice dual-coating of hip-hop and Sam Jackson.

You could even apply the same ideas to other ancient setting. Give us an angry Celtic loner roaming the Roman countryside and cutting his way through Cyborg Praetorian.

Or Pre-Colonial America filled with all the monsters described in Native American folklore and with the last of some tribe or another coping with the changing times as the White Man brings his own menace from his neon ships.

Whatever you do, its gotta be fucking dripping in mood and atmosphere.

For some settings, this is especially hard. Samurai Jack, Afro Samurai, the main draw was the lonely journey with the MC, and such.

Is why Quests with them are hard to do well. Because you either need to be able to faithfully do a character, or make a super interesting one

Reminds me of this old One Piece thing I saw which was basically a reason to fap over Luffy. Was rather disgusting.

Okay Humility, I know you read these things since you always leave those coy little spoiler bullshit in the QTGs and I got quite a bit to say about you about the last two threads since I just now caught up on them. Sit tight, because this is a multi-parter.

Anyways, ignoring your little ragequit/bawwquit which was annoying enough by itself in its own right, this is about the thread you DID run. First off, you said time and time again that this was our thread off from all the shadowruns and drama, a thread just for smut and lighthearted shit, but we only get like 5 posts of smut the entire thread, and it was some of the most formulaic smut I have ever read.

Throw some variety in there, man! Ive read grocery lists sexier than that. But hey, you tried, which I guess is all any of us can ask for, even if it was over almost as soon as it began.

No, my real bone of contention is what happened immediately after the smut. First, you freak us out over Thomas undergoing a Change only for it to be something comical. Which I will admit was initially a pretty clever reversal and kept in tone with what you promised, even if the main reason it worked is because everyone was expecting you to make things all melodramatic like you usually do.

Oh wait, then you turned around and in quit literally the very next post made it all melodramatic again. Worse yet, you made it melodramatic over some of the dumbest possible shit. So fucking what if Thomas wants to fuck his sister, Mike has already participated in incest as well as motherfucking tentacle sex, it is a total nonissue at best due to the world you built.

Which, again, would be fine if you followed through with it, but instead you just have us tell her to stop thinking these thoughts and she goes LOL, K and then top it off with yet another bout of LOL, SILLY PINK THOMAS. Thats like ending that one sad episode of Scrubs where the sassy black chick dies with a pie-in-the-face gag and a tapdance routine on her grave.

Then, to make things even worse, you decide to just up and give us the Marrowmaw core that we never earned. Yes, I know you feel bad about not giving us the full picture on that encounter, but if you're gonna have us fail something, you need to COMMIT to the failure and give it some lasting, negative consequences. Instead, you do the exact opposite and actually REWARD us for failure. Yeah, yeah, we lost our arm, big deal. I doubt there is anyone in the thread who sees the super useful, super lewd replacement tentacle arm as anything but an upgrade and then you went and nullified any trouble it might have caused on the homefront by casting out any misgivings Carrie had over it in the post literally directly after she brought them up in the first place.

To be brief, pretty much all of these screw ups seem to stem from the same root issue: you cannot commit to anything. You try to go for dramatic, but you freak out the moment it upsets someone and stumble your way back to lighthearted and lewd, deflating all the dramatic tension you tried to build in the process. Then when the lewd/lighthearted stuff turns out stale and dull, you try to spice it up with random, nonsensical drama, which leads us back to where we began. This causes you to just oscillate back and forth between lewd and melodrama with little rhyme or reason like some kind of coked out metronome.

Basically, you REALLY need to fucking work on your pacing. Not your plot pacing, but your tonal/dramatic pacing. You brush aside your drama for smut but then you turn around brush aside that smut for more drama. If you want to go full Madoka Rejoicing While Tumbling Down, then go full on fucking Madoka Rejoicing While Tumbling Down and if you want to go full lewd, go full lewd, but all this pussyfooting back and forth between the two without getting anywhere on either is fucking frustrating beyond belief. And don't give me any of that

No, fuck that. Its been 18 fucking threads. If you have enough time to insert dragons (which I STILL don't get the reasoning behind cluttering the setting with a third faction that does absolutely fucking nothing), then you have enough time to make the characters have actual personality and interacting with them not suck so much.

Also, stop using that little catchphrase "If anons are angry, I am doing something right/it means they care". That rationale is fucking toxic. Some of us are angry because all the things you are repeatedly botching makes us care LESS.

Your grace period is long over, Humilty, its time to git gud or get dropped.

I showed up a few threads back to discuss the possibility of running a mostly episodic quest about a bounty hunter type hunting lowlifes in a brightly lit megacity in a Redline/Global Astroliner/LMS-inspired, melting pot-ish sci-fi setting and I just wanted to say that I still fully intend to run it and should have things in order for the first thread next weekend sometime. Seriously though, for all /tg/ bitches about haremfagging in quests, most harems in the genre do not include the MC *actually* getting multiple girls simultaneously. Rather, the MC is attractive to a half-dozen plus girls (for no real reason, as he's typically a listless loser and the girls have at least one thing going for them), all of whom are interested in getting down on his cock, but will never say it aloud. Generally, he is oblivious or at least indecisive about the situation, and this continues until sales wane, whereupon he inevitably picks the First Girl (if they don't just go for the vague ending to satisfy all the "fans").

Legitimate harem endings - i.e. endings where the MC clearly has more than one waifu - are rare. If you go to the TVTropes page (yes, I know), you'll find a boat load of "examples" that actually aren't. The only ones I can think of that do have real harem ends are Tenchi Muyo and Honeymoon Salad*.

*: Honeymoon Salad is actually really good and I recommend it.

The problem is that this is nearly impossible: as soon as any of the girls seriously signals interest, /tg/ would waifu the shit out of her. That's how they roll.

/tg/ doesn't do harems: they do Bioware romances. Pick out a girl (generally, the first one to show even the slightest interest in them (because this has never happened to them IRL, dohohoho)), then be endlessly loyal to them.

Archelon managed to keep /tg/ from picking a girl, but I don't read Harem Fag Quest so I don't know how.

I won't give too much feedback, as I don't have the time but overall it's pretty good. Your technical skill is alright, you update fast and with sizeable posts and your dialogue is fine (which is important as you have a lot of it). My main problem I've had with it is formatting as you're inconsistent with the usage of line breaks (try to make sure there's a whole blank line between paragraphs, including in dialogue).

Also, use commas to segue dialogue into tags. For example:

Ladst I recalled, the Observer didn't have root access to the server, only Kier did.

Biggest mistake SB made was putting root responsibility on a man that is still recovering from a lawsuit. Can't blame Kier either, Internet Brands is a POS company.

If you're not motivated, don't run. I think most people can agree to that.

Some QMs make a weekly schedule. So if you can think of a few days where normally nothing EVER happens, that might be a good day to run every week.

On one hand, it seems totally arbitrary - the QM is making up whatever he pleases. While there's no randomization, I feel that this is less a quest - less a game - and more a choose your own adventure narrative.

On the other hand, dice are random. With the best of plans and all factors in their favor, you can still tank if you get unlucky. That can be frustrating, and, at times, feel very unfair. But if there's no randomness at all, I feel as though something important is lost; we go back to the disadvantages above.

Is there really no right answer? Does it just depend upon the story you want to tell if you're a QM, and the game you want to play if you're a player? Or do you find one system objectively better than the other?

I've been pondering this for a while, but I'm not sure what to make of it.

There also the crit fail and crit success rolls that can happen at anytime. Plans should be able to give bonuses on rolls related to the plan. Of course, if things get fuck up in the process, the plan goes to shit and the bonus is gone.

However, don't take away advantages and not take away disadvantages or the opposite.

Like in Digger Quest. There been many, many 20's rolls that passed but it seems to only killed the crit roll of 20 to ever happened ever again. But Crit failing can still happened.

It not fair when there 1/20 chance of crit fail and 1/400 chance of Crit success (Doubles are the only crit success)

Still, It the GM quest, so maybe he will modify the rules to the degree that if the player got the stats and the bonuses to auto pass a roll even if the player roll a one, it an auto success. Not crit, just auto.

Crits being bad is a failure of the QM's implementation, not of the system.

If the plan is perfect, and a critfail happens, then the plan should still succeed but with unforseen consequences.

Too many QMs just use them as deadstops. They don't actually make anything happen, worse they do the opposite and grind the game and narrative to a halt.

Freeform systems are asking players for a decision and advancing the story to a point, before asking for another decision. These usually rely on stat systems to balance them out.

Rock Paper Scissor systems give choices in-battle to counter the opponent in some specific way. Like if the opponent is guarding, a guard break is the 'successful' option, however, if he's attacking, guard break is the 'failure' option. None of the options are specifically labeled this way, players have to deduce which action is what and how their opponent is reacting based on hints that the QM gives them.

Example: Let's say three options are Guard Break -> Defend -> Attack - > Guard Break

Your opponent stands before you. His legs are firm, but closer inspection reveals his trembling a bit at the knees. His feet, once happily boasting a light, energetic spring to them have since lost the energy that accompanied his demeanor. Now they sit completely motionless, flatly planted in his sandals. His face shows a stoic expression, yet, a slight flinch betrays the otherwise serious nature of his glare. A small bead of sweat runs down his left cheek as his shoulders hunker down and his body contorts itself to match that of a marble statue than that of a man.

Your move:

>Guard Break
>Defend
>Attack

Answer: Guard Break, the hint was that he is nervous and therefore less likely to attack, as well as his stance being more akin to blocking and guarding as opposed to attacking

This is a simple example but it's the best way I can think of to illustrate RPS systems in combat. QMs wouldn't actually label the three options as their function, instead letting the players deduce their purpose and maybe mix-and-match different attacks.

My preference is to use dice to add the random element--it's not necessarily degrees of success, it's what happens to derail player action. Having a random event table and rolling to see what happens to interrupt, intervene assist or sidetrack the mission is one idea. Using a smaller die (not d20) to describe how much luck is needed to pull off the plan, and having the margins of success or failure provide setbacks or benefits in game is another.

What I'm saying is, don't let d20 mentality color your thoughts on how to use dice.

Not necessarily. Hacking can be handled Hollywood style, with virus injections, counter-hacking and firewalls. Mass combat is even easier: Charge, hold position, fall back, suppress. Describe the morale of each unit, or the gesticulations of the enemy commander.

I get it that there's plenty of people disliking Princess Guard Quest, but that doesn't mean that you have to act towards Bloodline Protector Quest as your lord and saviour, saving everything that's right with the genre.

I mean, it's only one thread. Sure, the writing is alright and the pacing is good, but don't get your hopes up so much. Because then, when the QM will fuck up, plenty of people will throw a bitchfit and another shitstorm will materialize.

Like say you're assaulting a bunker

Take Cover -> Covering Fire -> Advance -> Take Cover

And the players themselves, through contextual clues, would understand that these are the same combat choices they've always made, only now they are labeled differently.

Let's try hacking a computer then

Example:
Let's say for a hacking minigame, it's established that Implanting a Virus works on old machines, Password cracking takes time, and manually removing the machine makes noise.

You sit at the terminal, odd characters and images blip into your field of vision as the plastic housing flips open like a clamshell. A stoic, holographic wall impedes your progress on the poorly-used monitor, demanding to know your name and your credentials. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. You notice, looking down at your keyboard, that the keys are worn at specific places on the center of the keys, this at least gives you a username: "NSF001". The password still can't be found through physical inspection of the terminal. Some electronic inspection indicates that the terminal itself is about ten years old, never had a firmware update since then. Some light probing of system memory tells you that the password was recently entered. It's since been partially overwritten, but you are able to deduce at least part of the password that was likely used to access this terminal. "SM_SHTH_S_A_E"

Not too far off, you hear that security bot, coming back to make its rounds. You can steadily hear it click its guns to ensure that they are always ready for use.

What do you do?

>Implant Virus
>Password Crack
>Tear it out of the wall, use your PDA to authenticate

Answer: Implant Virus, it's an old machine and the security bot will find us if we take too much time or make too much noise.
