Now that I'm starting to settle into a new place, a new job, and a new routine, I figured I would ease my mind by running a game for people. A Dark Heresy game, nice and simple. Got a fair number of completely new people in it, and the first episode has turned out quite well. As always, to maintain the promises I made years ago, I'll be providing the archive of events. In Excelsus: A Midsummer Knight's Dream, the players are soldiers for hire, working for a mercenary guild on the hive world of Nemi in the Tiji Sector, trying to make their way through the universe and the many dangers it holds. Every day is a chance for another bounty, and another death.

The Hive World of Nemi, a world of polluted jungle and desert. The large edifices of the human Hives spread across the world like big metal tumors dug into the ground. Life is hard in the hives the deeper one goes. In the Waistworks of one hive at the world's equator, the Shattered Suns Private Mercenary Guild opens its doors for the day's business. The guild Overseer is filing contracts and paperwork from jobs long past, and it seems some fresh jobs were posted, the ink on the old parchment still shining. It seems there are two new postings this day.

Ophilia and Lucius head over, reviewing the parchments over a mug of recaf. Bekowski wanders over as well, waiting for the others to read the parchments. In one, the Merchant Guilds of Nemi have placed a bounty of 6000 thrones on a Gang Leader in the Hive's Underworks. This Gang Leader has been stockpiling large amounts of explosives and ammunition to stake a claim into the Hive's Waistworks. This scares the merchants, and they wish the gang leader removed.

In the second, a number of Nobles in the Hive Plazas of Nemi have placed a 7000 throne bounty on a Noble. Garish displays of wealth and influence has put her peers on edge. Her last display, however, has drained her resources dangerously, so now is the time to take her out and preserve the status quo.

"Second job's pay is better, and it sounds less risky, meaning something horrible will probably happen..." sighs Ophilia, returning to a corner to maintain her rifle as Vathrek and Wolfhound make their way in.

"Oi. Fresh postings. Ganger lord or some noble," notes Lucius, "End them for the pay day."
"So, which are you thinking of pursuing?" asks Bekowski.
"I am partial to noble heads," states Lucius, "The finery glitters nicely when they pop."
"Hmmmm. So either knock off the guy with noble shit or the guy with underground shit. Who's standing are we going to mess up with our guild is the main question..." considers Wolfhound.
"I'd say hit the noble as well," offers Bekowski, "Get some favors from the nobility, and decapitating a house dissuades any revenge."
"Well, that's how things work," confirms Lucius, "Higher price buys loyality"
Ophilia nods, beginning the reassembly of her rifle.
"Yeah, but who's paying for this ganglord's head anyway?" Wolfhound asks, crossing his arms, awaiting a reply.
"Merch Guilds, or so I've been told it reads," states Bekowski.
"Don't trust it. the Merchs are nearly as bad," says Lucius warily, "Same thuggish attitude, fewer bullets"
"Empirically speaking, the noble is probably more risk; however the gang assassination could have unforeseen consequences, such as higher prices from reprisals against the merchants," Vathrek points out.
"Ganger's got backup, practically by definition. The noble reads like a softer target," Ophilia points out.
"Merchants, nobles, both have shit loads. But you know the laws of supply-and-command, highest bidder wins," observes Wolfhound.

Vathrek turns to the Overseer on duty, seeking out more information.
"is there a timeframe given for the contracts?" he asks.
"Posted fresh this morning," says the Overseer over his paperwork, "Only timeframe is how long it takes you to get things done, or how long it takes someone else to try the contract."
"Listen, none of that shit matters right now. We start at square-zero... which job are we doing first?" demands Wolfhound.
Vathrek thinks a moment, "Should we chose to pursue the noble, the first order of business would be exploring if there is a guard presence, or a history of using discrete protection."
"Sounds like a plan," agrees Ophilia, "Do our research, hit her hard & fast, then we can worry about gangers."
"Sounds good." Lucius declares, "We will take the noble job."
"The noble? Fuck yeah, when are we rolling out?" asks Wolfhound excitedly.
Bekowski looks over to the Overseer. "Hey, mind if we take the bounty sheet with us? Might need it," he asks.
The Overseer nods, making a note in his cogitator's records as Bekowski takes the sheet.. "The Noble mission, eh? Target's name is Tessa Kiryakov, and she owns a Manse in the Hive Plazas."
He prints out some new forms on an autoscribe, the parchment falling to the floor.
"No further information was posted," the Overseer continues, "But finish her off and bring back some proof, and the pay will be handed over."
Wolfhound snickers. "Hey, the proof is why I bring along my hatchet..."

The Fireteam leaves the Shattered Suns Mercenary Guild office, to begin their selected mission. The hive they are in consists of four main areas - the Underworks, which is the bottom-most support section of the hive, the Canalworks, which is storage and transportation, the Waistworks, that holds habs, guilds, and manufactorums, and the topmost Hive Plaza, where the nobles live.

"I recommend we make for a suitable public terminal where I can make some inquiries without a direct trail to here," suggests Vathrek.
"I don't know much about nobility, but aren't they, like...divided up into houses that start with their first name?" muses Wolfhound, "Or was it their middle name..."
"Probably their last name," notes Bekowski, "That's usually the thing that's passed on, besides wealth and skullduggery."
"Oh right. Fuckin' forgot," laughs Wolfhound.
"So, Vathrek, you know where this terminal is?" asks Bekowski.
"There are several that come to mind," states Vathrek, "However, which will be most useful is uncertain."

In the Waistworks, the public information terminals also share their locations with minor shrines of the Mechanicum. Vathrek leads the Fireteam to one near the passages to the Canalworks.

Bekowski stops walking in utter disbelief. "You do realize what Vathrek is right?"
Ophilia chuckles a bit, as the mechanical armored form of Vathrek pauses a moment.
"A nice guy. Thats all," coughs Lucius, "Don't push it...him."
"while I may have had 'disagreements' with my colleagues before, I find it highly unlikely that they would permit gangs control of territory most important to the efficient running of this hive," explains Vathrek.
"Oh, yeah, sure... sorry about that," coughs Wolfhound.
Bekowski shakes his head slowly. "Alright, faster we get there faster we get our info. Let's get moving again."
"It is of no importance," beeps Vathrek, "Far more pleasant than some of the aspersions that have been cast on my opinions previously"

Heading a little deeper into the Hive's Waistworks, and passing by a number of open air shops selling small bobbles and religious eikons, the shrine comes into view. The shrine is indeed small, manned only by a pair of techpriests - one at attention, the other intoning prayers while soldering some wires together. Vathrek moves forward to greet the adepts present.

"Triarius," the techpriest nods, as he continues his vigil.
"Greetings, I have need of a terminal in order to make an inquiry regarding some recent events," explains Vathrek.
"Terminal is operational, Triarius. Omnissiah bless your search," the Techpriest drones.

In addition to the terminal, a pict-caster seems to be relaying the day's news. Wolfhound finds the techpriests' actions somewhat silly, but adjusts the stuttering pict-caster to a clearer channel, much to the consternation of the techpriest soldering wires. They appear to be running a special on the human deaths on the world of Asev, which has plagued the world for nearly 8 years now. The cause appears to be a mutagenic poison that causes one's blood to catch fire and one's heart to explode. The origin is unknown, but seems to originate in the archeotech water purifier systems. Since everyone is too scared to open it up and check because archeotech, the deaths are considered "Acceptable." Wolfhound doesn't mind the images of the victims being brought out across the pict-caster.

Vathrek, however, has little success in searching out information. It seems there is very little to find, or perhaps he is not searching for the correct things.

"It seems we will have to employ more conventional methods for gathering target information," sighs Vathrek.
"Be scary until people give us what we want?" offers Lucius.
"Perhaps the lady would be of some assistance here?" posits Vathrek, "It is my understanding that good target information is vital to the action of sharpshooting."
"You flatter me, Vathrek," Ophilia says wryly. "Yeah, I know a thing or two about scoping out a deader. This noble has enemies - some of them hired us, after all. They're bound to have some details."
"I think it might be time for us to start rubbing elbows with the upper crust..." muses Lucius.
"Yup. Time to head up, then?" asks Ophilia, hefting her rifle.
Lucius gathers Wolfhound from his rapt attention to the pict-caster, and the Fireteam heads on its way.

The path to the Hive Plazas is simple enough. A couple of turns through the metallic caverns, and the Fireteam gets the feeling they are ascending ever higher. After about an hour's walk, the halls begin to widen, becoming more ornate. Finally, a big ass carved door lies ahead. Ophilia begins by knocking politely, but the door taunts her with its immobility. Lucius knocks harder, also to no avail.

"The door won't fucking open," sighs Wolfhound.
"So, anybody know how to pick a lock?" asks Bekowski.
"If you will allow me some room, I should be able to perform the appropriate actions," offers Vathrek.

Vathrek fiddles with the old lock, rusting from disuse. The lock is a simple pin lock, and picking it is easy enough when Vathrek brings out his multikey. The lock clicks, and the doors slowly open themselves a bit.

"I should really have it noted that it requires maintenance, but I have a suspicion that the adepts are being intentionally kept away from this particular task..." observes Vathrek.

Sunlight washes over the Fireteam as Wolfhound pushes open the door. Raw, unfiltered sunlight, which means the Fireteam is now above the cloud cover. All around are foppish nobles and their attendants, meandering about, looking nobley.

Bekowski shields his eyes. "Huh. Damn nobles took all the sun for themselves," he mutters.
Lucius stretches, enjoying the bright skies and breathable air. "I will never get used to that hiver life. I missed the sun," he declares.

Ophilia merely squints in the bright sun, raising her hood as her eyes adjust. Wolfhound groans as well, setting his photo-contacts against the 'unnatural' sunlight. The Fireteam can see the central spire rise even further, but all around are a number of manses all around, where the nobles live. Such real estate would probably cost upwards of hundreds of thousands of thrones, probably much more. Each manse is flanked by armed guards, whose sole purpose in life is to guard their locations. Perhaps one or two even like swords.

"How is that for a cushy gig? Pay is probably good..." thinks Lucius.
Wolfhound clears his throat, whispering to Bekowski, "I suggest you don't go waving around that fuckin' bounty, just keep it to yourself. Go somewhere private if you want to get some information from it. Right?"
"Whaddya think I am, an amateur? I got a plan for this." Bekowski whispers back.

Some of the Nobles are beginning to stare. People from the lower hives are not usually found in the Plazas.

"I suggest that we proceed before we attract any undue attention..." offers Vathrek.
"Alright, we better get moving. That infestation isn't going to clean itself," coughs Bekowski as he tries to make an impromptu alibi while the Fireteam leaves, "Let's see if we can find a watering hole of some sort. Information usually abounds there."

"Quiet, don't want this kind of thing leaking out to the public," hisses Bekowski, "Could cause complete breakdown."
"We're on fuckin' Nemi, dickweed, Asev must be hundreds of thousands of miles away from here!" says Wolfhound.
"Quiet, trying to bullshit a story as to why we're up here!" yells Bekowski.
"I'll talk about whatever I want, cocknose! You can't tell me what to do!" Wolfhound yells, a minor crowd now beginning to form, all staring at everyone.
"Oh, throne!" sighs Ophilia.
Lucius raises his gun. "My patience is thin. We are moving. Now."
Bekowski points to the crowd, staring back. "Hey, don't you guys have money to throw away somewhere else?" he asks as the Fireteam continues moving.
Vathrek can only shake his head, a brief thought given to attempting to remember the last time he had emotion, let alone such an outburst.

Reaching the central plaza, people are just milling about, breathing oxygen and comparing how rich they are. The occasional stares nonetheless follow the Fireteam around. Bekowski looks around for a bar or club, but the best he can find is an open-air cafe. While Vathrek stays outside, an augmented trooper like himself not quite fitting in, the rest of the Fireteam head in to find information.

Bekowski makes his way to the counter, followed by Lucius and Ophilia, and last Wolfhound after using the restroom.

The cashier wanders over. "Can I get you anything...sirs?" she says as she notes she's not dealing with the usual clientele.
"Ask her if she's got any smokes," demands Wolfhound.

Lucius requests a cup of recaf, and Bekowski gets a house special latte with amasec-laced grox milk. The prices are shocking, 8-10 thrones for a single cup, but they pony up. Regrettably, she has no lho sticks on hand, which once more sets off Wolfhound.

"Are you fucking serious? What's a man got to do in order to get some FUCKING SMOKES AROUND HERE?" he cries.
"Sir! Please calm down!" the cashier says, somewhat scared now. Wolfhound and Ophilia look down to notice a blinky red light under the counter. Worse, Vathrek outside sees a collection of Arbites.

"Move!" yells Ophilia, as the Fireteam tries to leave, coming face to face with the Arbiters. Their scowls are wearing scowls. EVERYONE is staring now.

"You might wish to vacate the premises, the local law enforcement appear to be interested and agitated..." Vathrek states over microbead.
"Don't worry, I've dealt with these guys before," offers Wolfhound, "You don't run from these guys."
This concerns Bekowski, who throws some more thrones on the counter. "Hey, do you guys have a back exit?" he asks, but the cashier simply shakes her head.

The Arbiters finally arrive, their shotguns brandished. "Out," they demand.
"What's the problem here, officers?" asks Wolfhound.
"We're watching you, scum," scowls an Arbiter, "Get gone."
"We got a bit lost on our way to a meet a client. Very sorry," stammers Lucius, as he, Bekowski, and Ophilia leave. Wolfhound simply taks a drag of his lho.
"Get gone, now." scowls another Arbiter. He pumps his shotgun.
Wolfhound gets the picture, and joins everyone else.

The trail of eyes never seems to leave the Fireteam now, as they walk through the Plaza. Ducking into an alley, the Fireteam attempts to plan their next move.

"Because who would be brave enough to answer?" a male voice asks from behind the Fireteam.
"You, obviously," Bekowski snarks, as everyone turns to face the new voice.

"Well no shit, huh?" grunts Wolfhound, "And who are you supposed to be?"
"My name is unimportant," The man of covered face and clearly noble countenance adjusts his mesh coat, "And your very loud friend has a point, she has made many enemies."
"Wolves make good pets, friend," laughs Lucius.
"Just know that I'm one of many who are quite sick of Lady Kiryakov's games," the shadowed man says.
Ophilia smiles, glad to have finally found someone who doesn't hate them on sight.
"She wanders about, buying the flashiest things, flaunting her wealth in front of us, and paying for the best troops," the mysterious man says, "We had a nice status quo going on until she got uppity."
"What kind of troops we talking about?" asks Bekowski.
"Best troops? Can you give us details?" adds Ophilia.
"Enforcers. Armsmen. Heavy brutes. But luckily, her funds are almost dry now,' he says.
"Advance enough that they'll stick around for a while," the man in shadow explains, "You won't outwait them. If you do, she'll recover her funds and buy more."

"How would she react to more... 'applications'?" asks Bekowski.
Lucius laughs. "Heh. I work for cheap if i need to..." he says.
"Probably with a full scale firefight, now that you've caused such a...ruckus. Which would be interesting to see," laughs the man, "It's up to you. If you find a way to stealthily assassinate her, job done, you get paid. If you outflash her, we'll throw in an extra 500 thrones to the final bill."
"Bigger the risk, the bigger the payout, in essence," observes Bekowski.
"She knows we're coming?" asks Wolfhound.
"I think everyone knows that someone who shouldn't normally be here in the Hive Plazas is. Since she knows she's got enemies, she's going to be skittish," explains the nobleman.
"I was afraid of that," sighs Ophilia, "And from what you've told us, it sounds like her forces are better equipped for a head-to-head conflict."

"Can you locate the manse here?" he asks. Luckily, the noble can accurately highlight the location.

"Yeah but how do you expect us to run stealth if she probably knows we're coming? Please.." sighs Wolfhound.
"Of course she does. Her peers want her head, and then a group of obvious mercs show up in the Plazas?" Ophilia points out, "She'll be on edge if she has half a brain."
"Perhaps we could play that factor up," notes Bekowski, "Pretend we've got more on our side. Make our forces seem bigger, and somewhere else."
"As I said, up to you. Your escapades so far have only made things more difficult, but not impossible," the shadow man says, "How you finish her is up to you."
"Do you have an approximate number for the guards she's hired?" asks Vathrek.
"That much, we do not know," he states, "But a good healthy number of guards."
"And the Arbites? They said they were watching us, who here's bought their loyalty, her or you guys?" demands Wolfhound.
"The arbites watch you because you've made quite a scene so far, which might make a subtle approach...tricky. They report only to their local provost," he says, "with that, we've given all we're willing to give. The rest is on you. Good luck, and make it worth our dollar."
"We will, sir," says Ophilia

The man disappears into the shadows as the Fireteam make their way to the manse for a scouting op. Following the markers given by their mysterious ally, they decide to wait for nightfall, where there will be less guards, and hopefully make the job easier. The Manse is surrounded by an outer square wall, with a guard tower at each corner. Ophilia scopes out that each guard tower has two guardsmen and a searchlight in it, while Vathrek's auspex picks out nebulous blobs in the inside, meaning their mark is within. He also determines a number of weak points in the walls, prime locations for demo-charges.

The Fireteam decide on a plan - Wolfhound will advance and place a demo-pack on the manse's walls, while Bekowski will hallucinogen blast one tower, and the rest will silence the second. Wolfhound will plant another demo-pack if needed on the wall to allow entry, while advancing from covering fire. Wolfhound sneaks up to the wall, under the less-than watchful eyes of the tired guards, and plants the first charge. The wall goes up, and Bekowski masterfully lands a grenade in the first tower, causing one armsman to go insane while another jumps off the tower thinking he can fly, splatting on the ground. Ophilia snipes out the second armsman, while Lucius and Vathrek take down the second tower in range with a salvo of stubber and lasblaster fire. Their route open, Wolfhound advances under the smoke of the first explosion to reach the manse itself.

Wolfhound shoots out a stained glass window, rushing to cover inside the building as two bodyguards rush down, firing at him. Luckily, the cover holds and he prepares a counter-attack. The rest of the Fireteam advance to the new entrance as a number of bodyguards flood down a central set of stairs. While Wolfhound and Bekowski toss grenades at the five bodyguards, who in turn fire back with their Deathlight lasguns, Lucius and Ophilia combine shotgun and rifle fire to down one bodyguard. However, one more figure makes its way to the melee.

"GET THIS SCUM OUT OF MY HOUSE!" cries a female voice.

The Fireteam has found their target.

Tessa Kiryakov is armed with a duelling las, and is surrounded in a dim yellow glow. She fires her duelling las, an accurate shot severely wounding Lucius. The situation is rapidly escalating, and the Fireteam know that if they don't finish things quick, the rest of the private army will arrive - further waves of armsmen and enforcers. Wolfhound tosses another frag, while Bekowski sends out another hallucinogen grenade. This would be the decisive strike, as the hallucinogen grenade goes off and its effects go off better than could possibly be expected - while one bodyguard maintains his composure, one begins jumping in place, another begins screaming about how everything has grown so much bigger, and the last begins to cram himself into any small place he can find. By far the most embarrassing is the noble, who has thrown herself out of cover and onto the ground, flopping like a fish trying to fly. Lucius and Wolfhound finish off the one competent guy with bursts of shotgun and autogun fire, as Vathrek provides suppressive fire from his Lasrifle, and the Fireteam moves in for executions.

While things go smoothly for the three bodyguards, a bullet to the skull solving each, the noble goes...less smoothly. Bekowski fires a round, which is deflected by some sort of field, but Lucius's blast from his Arbiter Super Shotty punches through, ending the woman's life. Wolfhound decapitates the body, preparing the head for presentation, while Ophilia cuts off the hands in case prints are needed. She also avails herself to a few small bitz of flash the woman was wearing. Lucius and Bekowski begin grabbing anything that looks expensive, while Vathrek removes the Refractor Field generator, noting it has burnt out and that by fixing it it might be possible to resell it.

"I just realized I have not directly killed a single person in this entire fight," muses Bekowski.
"You did more than anyone," Lucius suggests.
"You made a guy jump to his death!" Ophilia points out, "Anyway, Time to take everything that isn't nailed down and scram?"
"Sounds like a hell of a plan," agrees Lucius, "I don't know art, but I know I like gold."

After grabbing as much as they can carry, the Fireteam hears alarms as the rest of the complex begins to awaken. Deciding to quit while ahead, the Fireteam makes it out quickly, Wolfhound setting one last demo-charge to blow the manse sky-high. The Fireteam escapes from the Hive Plazas under the cover of the exploding manse, the trip back to the hive Waistworks a simple and quick affair.

"Now thats a job!" yells Lucius.
Ophilia grins broadly, agreeing.

Arriving at the Shattered Suns guild hall, Wolfhound provides the head, and Ophilia presents the hands. The Overseer reviews it, and marks off the job complete on the cogitator. He passes the fireteam a small case.

"And we shall split it evenly, since had we not also been there there would be far less of you here to contend with counting coins," points out Vathrek.
"You get an even split," says Lucius with finality, "That's how this works. I got a las blast to the chest. Doesn't feel great."
"You fucking what? I got to at least compensate for the democharges..." starts Wolfhound, rather upset.
"Seventy-five hundred split five ways makes a K and a half for each of us, even before we factor in loot. Loot can help cover everyone's ammo. Sound fair?" Ophilia suggests, trying to calm everyone down.
"Sounds fair. I have 5 rifles, that should cover the costs easily," Lucius nods, unpacking the gear.
"The field I removed from the target requires repair. Should I prove able to repair it, it will either be sold and the profits split or I will make just compensation to the group," adds Vathrek.
"Probably wiser to keep the field. Hard to earn more gelt if you're dead," Ophilia suggests.

"Fuck off. My bracket of ass-risking is higher than I've seen in all of you combined..." mutters Wolfhound, "While you were there nicking all you could get I was /still/ risking my ass. If that doesn't earn me some extra than why bother?"
We were 'nicking' on the group's behalf. That amounts to a bonus, same as the extra pay for booming the manse," explains Ophilia.
"Will you stuff it if i give you half my bonus?" sighs Lucius.
Wolfhound slumps his shoulders, looking towards the counted out reward in his hands. "Whatever works. But I was the one earning that bonus, the explosion was mine."
"And if I hadn't told you how to achieve the effect?" asks Vathrek, "Knowledge counts, not just the application of force."
"Take the 50 thrones," says Lucius, disgusted, "If you do this next time, we will have words. Harsh words. Are we clear?"
Wolfhound makes a mocking puppet with his hand, "And I don't need your chump-change. Just take this," he says as he hands each of them 1500, keeping 1500 for himself like the rest wanted.

The mission debriefing now completed, Vathrek begins medical treatment in the guild's chirurgeon wings, applying the medical care he feels each deserves.

End Episode 1 - The High Road

Overall, a good first game. Three are completely new, one had not played Dark Hershey in a while, and I was a bit rusty myself, so things took a bit as we all learned or relearned things. I think this team has the start of something great, as long as they can support each other in the upcoming trials.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this game turns out.

To be fair, he's COMPLETELY new to tabletop games. He had only done freeform before. As a result, I believe him to be filled with a noob's zeal, which I think will temper over time as he finds his niche.

Recruited two weeks ago in a Dark Hershey general, got enough for a full team, and started last week. This Wednesday will be episode 2, and the archive as always sometime later. I'm aiming for Mondays.
