The group let me read the handbook for an hour or so while they played regularly. I chose my character, showed it to the DM, and got his approval.
I was added to the adventuring party at the next town visit. Things were really going well for nearly two hours.
Until, that is, I rolled lucky and got a double-kill on a single throwing-axe attack.
The resident that-guy went berserk because I was a cleric with the 'thrown weapons' proficiency. The DM had no problem with it (in the setting we were in, clerics of some gods could use axes, so I had asked the DM if it was alright and got the nod).
The that-guy made such a stink about it, I had to call home for a ride because I was so embarrassed (I was 15 at the time, most of the others were a year or two older, and it was the Friday of a weekend-long thing).
Kinda sucks, it put me off the whole tabletop thing for years. Didn't get back into it until college.
