What's the correct implementation of the infamous treasure chest mimic in a dungeon crawl? I feel like not having at least one is sinful.
How much do you telegraph it? What's the penalty for not noticing it and just opening the chest like an absolute gutterbrain dipshit? How well does it camouflage itself under scrutiny? Do you implement it as a solo encounter when it's a boss-level threat to a party, or when it alone is merely an average threat, but you put an extra whammy in the room like "it was sitting on a reverse-activated pressure plate that sets off a whirling scythes trap when it starts moving?" That's my personal favorite.
Any mimic horror stories?
