I mean, I actually like this comic, but reading this panel over makes you realize that the author really doesn't know fighting very much.
Purpose and justice bring you to the fight, but what carries you through it is a mixture of physical and mental abilities, potencies, or skills. Even if you're so worked up you're insensate to pain, there's still a system there, you don't just become "mindless animals" once you get tired, or you run low on air, or you start taking damage. War becomes chaos when there's crowds of people, and you can't account for the activity going on around you from every angle, but when it's shit like personal dueling or small numbers conflicts, as you get here, everything, even that chaos, is down to logic.
Though in fairness, if he implemented combat science, it'd fly in the face of a lot of the universe's currently established trends of "you become a master of X through almost ignoring it straight, and doing Y, This will make sense in fifty years".
