Beyond the Sun is Tech trees: the game. Which sounds amazing but I found it underwhelming, though I am pretty alone in this asessment.
Era of tribes (which is a very underrated civ game btw) had a very interesting take on tech trees but for some ungodly reason decided to make the visual design into something that makes you want to tear your eyes out, and I do not say that lightly.

Lads, I've played Bonfire today. Got it largely because it was dirt cheap (17 euro) and it's a large Feld.
When I went through the rules, I for the first time really understood the faggots that call all euros theme- and interactionless messes. The art and components are great (except those fucking copypasted gnomes) but the theme is almost actively detrimental to the game, it somehow makes it harder to wrap your head around than if it was entirely abstract.
...yet, I still found the game pretty good.gotta play with 3 others tomorrow and check if it holds up or takes forever.

Buying used is not worth it in my country. Only exception is for games that no longer retail, but even there you will never get a bargain, on the contrary.
How is the situation in your country? I saw some (I think) american posters here who get Jaws of the Lion for 25 bucks in a sale. This is absolutely unthinkable here, board games retailers always keep the same price. And when they do have a MEGA SALE, it is like 5-10 bucks, a joke.

That's an arcehtypal Feld game. The guy makes theme neutral, low interaction point salads exclusively, and most of them are pretty darn good, fun and mechanically tight. If you're not thirsty for great visuals and compelling themes and are mildly autistic you'll probably enjoy a Feld.

I can safely say from what I read, I genuinely really like the setting and story. I'm not a cringey reddit who basedjaks over 'soulslike' but they really nailed dark fantasy here that's kind of like dark souls esque story and world without being a direct copy or feeling cheap. It's doing its own thing but I like it a lot.

I'd venture to guess none of them has felt a single sincere conviction about anything since childhood. They exist as polyps upon the colon of boardgaming, satiating themselves on the perceived failures of others (i.e. "The Designer") while adding nothing new to the discourse aside from ironic complaint.
They're a group of insecure, lost, rapidly aging burnouts who silently believe they could do a better job of making boardgames than the professionals in the industry. Yet they lack the ambition and ability to actually enter the very industry they're obsessed with. They choose instead to fuck around and make youtube review piss-takes well into middle age.
They are awful, awful people. I've met thousands just like them, and the last thing we need is for these people to gain any attention for their navel gazing.
Please, /tg/, do not aspire to become anything like these people. Theirs is a lonely road leading to depression and a life devoid of real purpose.
I hope they disappear and their disaffected followers stop subsidizing their lifestyle. Perhaps that would force them to do something productive with themselves.

There are people selling their opened and played copies of games at around 80% of the retail cost here in an EU country, which is even worse when you take shipping into consideration. Occasionally, though, if you wait long enough, you can find some really good deals.
Picked up Vast: Crystal Caverns along with the expansion and the miniature pack (though that wasn't the selling point for me) for ~40€.
Got a heavily used OG GH with one of those inserts and Forgotten Circles for ~70€ from another guy.

It's kinda sad that there are so many fantasy dungeon crawler RPG board games, like I could easily name 10 right now without thinking, but so little Sci-Fi ones, I could literally name 0. But I guess this is not only board games but also video games, but still. Imagine a Gloomhaven style game but in a sci-fi setting with plasma rifles, cybernetics, hacking and stuff, this would be so cool. Or at least some cyberpunk.

Eclipse. It's not as bad as people here say it is but it's a game that tries to be both euro and a wargame but ends up being a mid euro with a shallow wargame tacked on. Also because it's a euro at the core, the dice rolls can just lose you the game early and there's no way to come back from losing a bunch of resources. I wouldn't refuse a game but if I'm picking the game I'd rather play a better war game or a better euro. Considering the price and how much space it takes up it's gotta go.

Point salad euros. No modern designer can make them well. It's always designed so that it doesn't fucking matter what you do, you always get a ton of points and somebody wins by a close margin at random. These games are designed to prevent players from being able to play well. Played Endless Winter at a friends place, it was the absolute epitome of this design philosophy and it was boring as fuck. Ark Nova looks the same. It's made for people who want to have the image of being a board game nerd who plays complicated board games without actually doing it.

I used to be very hyped about eclipse, even defended it here a few times, then when the time came to buy it i watched a let's play and i jist felt this a 100 times. Especially the euro part, you spend so much of the game setting up, but really it just feels like a kemet tier economy with extra (random) steps. Also on rng, the starting planets you get seem huge as well. I still think getting researches and kitting your ships is cool as fuck, but everything else seems like the game is making you waste time preventing you from getting to the good part.

At least twenty? I read an article about twelve in development, and since then my friends in the L&C discord have told me theres an Aztec Flower Wars and two different Naval ones in the early stages.

No, it's really not - it's the fact that he's asking for more BIPOC women (not BIPOC men because he already has a full demogroup for those) and not adding new white playtesters to the pool and those potential playtesters saying that white opinions are being disregarded.

If you take racebaiting out of the equation it would be no different than a dev saying I've already got a ton of playtesters that play heavy games and now I'm only taking playtesters that play party games so I get their opinions and heavy player crying about how their opinions are being invalidated.

Besides - it's his game, who gives a shit. He can playtest however he wants.

SE4X with Close Encounters. I've played it several times with friends and then solo and it never clicks. The tech tree is very unexciting with upgrades mostly amounting to linear incremental increases like "move 3,4,5..." spaces total. The game also runs way too long especially after it's clear who the winner is so you can either have a very anti-climactic ending or continue playing a decided game for another hour. The hidden movement with decoys sounds great as a concept but in practice it turns very fiddly where you either remember the composition of all fleets or have to constantly look under the counters to see who's where, and those are a bitch to flip over on a flat table.

Loading a game up to the brim with a kitchen sink of optional rules and scenarios. It's okay to have some optional rules but once you cross a threshold it just becomes a band-aid to patch up an awful design.

I actually enjoyed Seafall, it's fun if you are the kind of player who enjoys doing a bit of everything instead of gimping yourself and focusing only on one aspect. Is tapestry even good? Everything about it makes me want to buy it, it's 4x, there's cool components, the factions sound cool and asymmetrical, the little board you build with cards as you advance eras, etc.

That's why I prefer some kind of variable factor in that sort of games desu.
Like King's Forge, where the resource cubes are actual dice, and the score cards require rolling specific results on the right resources, so usually you'll try to stockpile extras to increase your odds, but someone may come in with the bare minimum and snipe you with a lucky roll.

Fellas, just started a very consistent game group of 5 people. What are the games that play best for 5 players? Looking for both small and large games.

So far we've enjoyed Cosmic Encounter, The Crew, Kemet, Sheriff of Nottingham, Coup, Dutch Blitz expansion, Betrayal at House on the Hill.

Also just got Root+riverfolk expansion, but unsure how that'll go with 5.

I'm thinking of adding a worker placement and deck building to the collection, but it's small right now so I'll take any suggestions.

Root in my experience can vary, if your group is good at deciding what they'll do on their next turn before it starts its a fast and fun game

But my group has women so they can get decision paralysis (unlike other games where you get 1-2 actions a turn, Root gives you on average like 6 so you have a lot you can do)

I also wouldn't teach Root at 5 players. I also wouldn't table it unless you (or someone in the group) become VERY familiar with the rules since each faction plays extremely differently.

I like Scythe as a good intro board game, I know it gets shit on here a lot but its a solid Euro with simple action economy and extremely great rulebook/player aid (you will never check the rulebook once you start, everything is explained elegantly)

Also can suggest Nemesis (same thing as root, but is a simpler game, make sure you KNOW the rules),

Mansions of Madness, Unfathomable, and sentinels of the multiverse are good ones too.

Lastly, would recommend join a facebook group for board game reselling. You can easily buy 3x as many board games for the price of 1 for how cheap people offload their shit for.

Scythe seems cool and I'm sure itd be a great intro, but I can't imagine us getting many plays out of it. I actually have Wingspan too, but we're already moving on from it. The production is lovely though.

Besides the fact that it's super expensive and has many small boxes whcih gonna give me a cancer when it comes to setup.
Is it actually good?
Isn't downtime too long?

I think some dungeon crawler type games come close to the kinda gameplay I'd want, or even KDM, problem is those are too constricted to isolated scenarios. Mage Knight feels like traveling a vast world accomplishing shit, so I think a hybrid of both would be the best.

Have 2 of their resin miniatures. They are pretty dope. They stated that they will continue releasing miniatures. So agree nothing was lost. Might grab some I like, as they were my main interest for the game. Gameplaywise I am indifferent. They have some interessting ideas for the game, but could easily have been a total shitshow. They made several updates on their website, where they have shown gameplay bits. However nothing substential I would say. On the gulag is a thread containing all updates. However I didn't really bother reading deep into the gameplay part, as it is still in development. Would have done it, when the KS campaign started. From what I read the fights would have been more combo driven focued with psychology and magic added compared to KDM. Could have been great, could have been a total mess

If you find it at 50, buy it, regular price is about 120 iirc. It's one of the best solo/duo sandbox games ever created. The setup is fiddly, the learning curve is steep, the game is pretty darn long, but it's very rewarding. There's enough content in the ultimate edition to keep it fresh for years. I don't play it that often because I'm not much of a solo gamer, teaching it isn't easy and my gaming friends will pick lighter, shorter, flavor-of-the-month crap every time. Don't play it at 3 or 4, or with heavy AP people, it will easily double the play time.

It's way, way too expensive new. There's no reason for it to be so expensive. I got it used for 80 fully sleeved and that is what I'm comfortable with. I would not pay more than 80 honestly, it's a fun game but it's not a deep one, it's just a thematic romp.

there's not quite churchill levels of negotiation but there are some political arenas to navigate. the tension of the dynamic is the 2v1 on each map but one player is both the Pragmatic army allied with Austria /and/ Prussia & Saxony opposed to Austria
the political levers are somewhat abstracted but tie in beautifully with the card system that drives the game. they also have a big impact on the large scale strategy decisions you have to make
then the granular tactics and the grid system of the map makes for some exciting plays every game
it's thematic and not clunky, great rulebook, and there's plenty of latitude to deviate from the real historical conflict. love this one for a three player night which happens too rarely for me nowadays

The only similarity Scythe has to Wingspan is that the gameplay of both is underwhelming. In Scythe, you're racing for objectives, with some area control sprinkled in. In Wingspan, you're playing solitaire point salad.

Fucking hell I'm having so much more fun with Frosthaven than I did with Gloomhaven that it's insane. Not even trolling, each of the classes are so much more involved. In Gloomhaven it felt like I was barely thinking at all, just move forward and kill stuff, and CC stuff if I can't kill it. Playing as the geminate I have to manage two separate hands that operate at two different ideal ranges, equip buffs with good timing, swap between modes to maximize time between rests, occasionally choose to give myself a debuff in exchange to power a card up... They really pulled all the stops out with this game.
Also like the outpost building and new loot system, it's like KDM lite in that regard.

I had a fun enough time playing it, but it mostly managed to make itself seem a lot more complicated than it actually was by making use of its hidden info and flashiness. By the time the shine of "woah unlocking areas, systems, and characters!" wears off you're pretty much boiled down to "I walk forward and kill the enemy" and every mission is like that. We played the game for a good 50 or so sessions and didn't even finish it (4 player group means games take fucking forever).
Frosthaven much more enamoring, it feels like they took the OG and improved on it in every way. I swear to god I'm not a shill.
