Muslim countries are filth in general. They also don't care about their secular histories, so any old architecture you find is going to be from ancient empires or semi-recent colonial rulers. The only traditional-style architecture that they make themselves is applied to mosques, and good luck getting near any of those if you're a heathen Westerner.

I hear Oman offers the perfect balance of tourist friendly x genuine cultural experiences. But Oman has it's own thing going on. Their sect of Islam is neither sunni nor shia, they have a very proud history as a maritime trading empire, they are not very oil/gas rich. Probably not what you think when you hear middle-east/Islam, but nonetheless it's on my bucket list.

Iran. At the very least visit Esfahan, Yazd and Shiraz. Also consider Tabriz, Abyane. Note that there's also a shittonne of ancient sites around Shiraz, like Persepolis, Cyrus' Tomb and more.

Mashad can be interesting too it's probably the most pious city in the country and has a huge mosque. Some of the post soviet central Asian republics are interesting as they have a weird blend of Islam, nationalism and old soviet cultures

The tour of the Grand Mosque in Bahrain cracked me up. The guide talked about how Islam is about humility and submission before Allah and all that, then immediately starts talking about the amount of money poured into the mosque. I wish I knew if there was a word in Arabic for "irony"

I don't have any photos on my phone, but Google "Oman castles"
My wife and I spent 'weeks wihna rental car touring historical sites in Oman, and each one we visited was better than the last. Well maintained and cheap to get into also. Along with hiking in Musandam it was the best vacation we've ever had.
