I did a ski season in japan and stayed for a total of 6 months, it really sobered me up from the drugs.

A six month to one year stay at the Shaolin temple is surprisingly affordable. Even if you don't want to go to the temple itself, there are dozens of Kung Fu academies in the town at the base of the mountain (Dengfeng) that you can also study at.

you can go and do a silent meditation retreat for free, i think they range from 3-10 days. no need to pay for anything, but you can donate as a contribution if you like.
sounds quite full on but a hitchhiker i met swore it was the best thing he'd done in his life.

That's true but there's an actual temple/monastery literally halfway up Wudang mountain, I did a training session there and they're legit monks. There's a hotel next to the temple where the tourist students stay.
Whether Kung Fu is a scam is a whole other debate but that's for >>>/asp/. Nobody with any sense studies Wudan Kung Fu because they think it will make them unbeatable in MMA or anything, it's just really cool.

There are also a tonne of academies in the town below Wudang mountain and of course those are basically just Kungfu schools and could be somewhat scammy if they're promising to teach no-touch kungfu magic or something.
I suppose the Daoist monks teaching the kungfu might also believe in their potions etc but you don't have to take that seriously, I've gotten just as much new age bullshit from serious western kungfu teachers that should know better and you just have to filter it out.

Not if it’s part of the San Francisco Zen Center, which has a monastery/farm in Marin, a temple in the city, and a monastery/retreat center in Big Sur... my sister and law and her husband are priests there and they’re legit Zen practitioners, following the line of a teacher who came from Japan in the late 50s, albeit with some small hippie California flourishes. There was a scandalous abbot a few years ago who got caught having an affair with one of the female priests, but it was just normal, one-on-one cheating, not culty stuff. They offer retreats and that sort of thing, but everything is on hold for Covid.

I did two meditation retreats in Thailand, one at a very famous monastery in the South and one at a neighborhood temple in the North; I am glad I did. I paid for the Southern one but the Northern one was free, as I entered the novitiate.

If you were really serious I know some people who have studied at Wat Pa Nanachat, the International Forest Monastery in the Northeast, but that place is best for people who really want to learn Theravada seriously and end up ordaining; it’s not as good for casuals.

At least as far as Thailand and Zen California are concerned, you’re more likely to pay for courses than find volunteer/free opportunities—to be frank, most people are useless to monks, who are pretty self-sufficient. No value added by them feeding you (in Thailand, once per day, all out of offerings from the community; in California three times a day out of a pretty good communal vegetarian kitchen/dining hall).
