It's a nice city. A lot to see and do, good food, decent local transportation, decent connections to the rest of the country. The tourist area is well defined and easy to navigate. Locals are decent. Try to have some kind of basic French - most seem to know basic English but if forced to speak it are generally cranky as a result (hence the reputation).

Most complaints of this city are ones you would hear of all cities of this size. Overall it's in the top tier of large developed cities worth visiting.
