The good news is that the local population will be very entertained and engaged with any attempts to sign what you need. They are often very excited just by seeing white people so that gives you an idea of how undertouristed vietnam is, the effect has not worn off like other parts of asia. Another bonus is outside of the most popular tourist areas in the country, there are basically no touts/scammers anywhere bothering you or trying to sell you shit.
The locals have the typical poor manners that asians in the area have like cutting in line, zero respect for personal space, physically pushy in crowds etc, they also love to throw or burn trash in any pristine nature that might be left. These negative traits really only become an issue somewhere crowded like an airport though.
Locals love drinking, beer can still be had for 50 cents at it's cheapest and is pretty decent, nitrous oxide is often available, weed seemed pretty rare except major tourist areas and I'm guessing it was a scam.>coom
I did not partake but there are 'massage parlors' that clearly do whoring in literally every town in the country. No shortage of that if you are into it.>the tourists
The hostel vibe is very good, despite being packed with some very annoying anglos, overall the mood was good and full of people with interesting stories, great company overall. Hostels are also the only place you can get help in good english in the country so I highly recommend staying with them whenever possible. >transport
Motorcycles are unironically the best way to travel the country short of planes which I won't count. They are somehow faster than night busses, and the train service is literally one line built by the french that is slow as shit and connects nowhere. In any case, the takeaway with vietnam is unless you want to fly there it takes a LONG time to get anywhere in the country, and all the tourist sites are very spread out.
