My grandfather was a sports writer for a local catholic paper in LA way back when, and he was once sent on assignment to cover a game, (can't remember where), and he actually ended up rooming with McCarthy in a hotel. They didn't talk politics but they did get slammed on scotch together and according to my dad it was a good time
