I used to be a typical nice guy abut I've only just realized that it was because having people tell me I was nice was the only motivation I had to be nice; I struggled to be nice without validation and therein lies the selfishness. Once those people left I changed. I'm still on the empathetic, docile side but I've done things I'm not proud of and I no longer have the apparently clean conscious of a nice guy.
