I wouldn't say that I've reached my full potential. But getting married does change things, and it let me not be as preoccupied with women. And it makes a lot of other things easier. I don't have to do all the chores and cooking like when I was a bachelor, I can split them with my wife. It just removes a number of little roadblocks you didn't realize were taking up mental RAM.

I got it through luck, above average speaking skills for an engineer, and a record of completing projects on time.

The engineering schools are turning out incels, and I think it's a disaster in the making. Most of the senior guys above me met their wives in college. I met mine after school, and that process of post-school dating was miserable, and that is years of my life I am never getting back. I can only imagine how bad it is for juniors.

Secondhand. The Boomer and Gen-X engineers seem a lot more normal and socially well-adjusted than the guys coming out of university now.

The younger guys are just more awkward, on average, and a lot have the defeated air of a guy that's given up on women - or they're manchild consoomers. But most of them came to the Christmas party alone.

As far as I'm concerned, I think the breakdown of college as a quasi-matchmaking institution like it was for Boomers and Gen X is one of the bigger problems (at least in my milieu of highly-educated professionals).

I don't want to go full Ronny Redpill here, but I think some of it has to do with female entitlement. They don't want the perceived drop in standard of living they would experience being supported by a junior white-collar professional relative to their job + the Daddy's (often a senior manager making 6-figures) Cash. They don't want a guy on a similar trajectory to their dad, they want a guy who can spoil them like their dad does now. This is my speculation.

My perspective as a current engineering student: I think there's been a mutual drop in dateability, caused by and feeding into a drying up of engineering student's social lives.
Intelligent, introvert types are more socially awkward because they don't get out and socialize IRL as much (probably due to the internet, honestly), and they in turn, don't socialize as much because they're all a bunch of socially awkward introverts.

And even when they do find women, they're settling hard by my estimate. One of the juniors brought his fiance to the Christmas party - a fat girl with a horrid tattoo sleeve of comic book characters. I was polite, but she didn't strike me as someone as sharp as her soon-to-be-husband. At a later date, he said verbatim "my wife's kid." Maybe he cannot do better, but if that's typical, it certainly seems like a downgrade relative to the man (reasonably fit, enjoys cycling and running).

I think older nerds tend to be more "gracefully" nerdy, if that makes any sense. Much more of a straightforward, unashamed love of their hobbies. Maturity definitely has something to do with it, but I get the sense that young adult nerds back in the 90s/80s/earlier weren't as bitter about being outsiders as young adult nerds are now. Just look at the type of shit getting posted on 4chan on boards like /v/.

I think nerdy girls are a bit insulated from the absolute worst of it, but the average nerdy girl nowadays is some fat weeb that speaks in twitterisms. The chance of finding a girl I'd even consider dating out of a random sample of women is pretty low.
