Ripped the front bumper, driver fender and grill off my 04 Highlander. Rough estimates from a body shop is $3k to get it fixed.
Should I just try and fix it myself? I have zero experience with body work but I have some tools. The parts would be about $500. I'm very poor, I would not have the $3k and even then everyone's booked 3-4 months out. Or is the hassle not worth my time?

TL;DR:
I am 31 years old and live with my alcoholic grandfather who has ridiculed and insulted me my entire life.
He payed for 6 months insurance on my car to teach me how to drive.
It's been 4 months.
In those 4 months he has repeatedly insulted me, mocked me, told me it's my fault I can't drive and will never be anything, etc
He payed for 6 months of insurance just to fucking mock and insult me further and say I have wasted his money
I have a mitsubishi eclipse which was my dream car as a kid but now I hate it and I don't want to live anymore

Do you not have anyone in your life who can teach you to drive?
Get a good friend to help and teach you. If you don't have a friend, take the car out on your own late at night and learn from there. Read your drivers manual, watch youtube, you will get there. My dad taught himself completely to drive, but that was in the 70s.

If things are so bad, stray away in the car for a while and teach yourself. Driving isn't as scary as it seems, you just need to pay attention and be aware.

I'm a bit retarded with maintenance stuff and I know very little
Right now my shitbox ('04 Corolla at about 400k miles) keeps throwing the ce light for an O2 sensor. The main symptom I've been experiencing is rough idling, especially when I'm holding the car with the brakes (it seems to work fine when it's in park). I've tried a few things based on recommendations from people I know (basically just regularly using injector cleaner, intentionally flooring it every now and then to get the exhaust nice and hot, and I ordered a replacement for the idle air valve).
Would it actually be worth the time and money to replace the O2 sensors as well? I don't want to get memed by Google searches but I really don't know what else I could do besides replace the whole exhaust which is outside the scope of my capabilities and expensive as hell.
I just need to ride this piece of shit until I'm.not stuck in the worst phase of my career.

I was doing a favor for my friend, her 16 Cherokee needed a new set of front pads because they were starting to squeal. The lug/stud combination things put up a bit of a fight on one side, but came off and I was able to get the pads on. I went to the other side, and aside from the lugstud with the wheel lock and one other, the lugstuds wouldn't budge. My neighbor even brought let me borrow his impact and they still wouldn't budge, and rounded off the unruly lugs. I'm assuming they're pretty well seized in there due to a combination of a tire shop overtorquing and galvanic corrosion. I put the old pads back on the other side and explained to her what's going on. Luckily she has an inspection coming up anyway, and I told her to tell them to extract the seized lugstuds, and crack the rear lugs all around, so I can finish doing the brakes. How labor intensive is getting these things out? We live in a rust belt state so it's not uncommon, I just want to be able to give her an idea how many labor hours she might expect to pay on top of her inspection. She had a pack of replacement lug studs in her trunk funny enough.

You can try cleaning your Mass Airflow Sensor and replacing your air filter with an el cheapo parts store special to see if that helps. I know Autozone also lets you rent O2 sensor sockets if you feel confident enough to try replacing them. To be fair at that impressive mileage it's fully expected for there to be some sort of emissions code. If it werks its not even worth worrying about.

but i paid $4000 for 2010 subaru forester with a new engine with 60k miles and the rest of the car has 200k. it was extremely well maintained and the interior looks almost new. have driven it a fair amount and had no problems.
also came with two extra sets of tires and a roof rack. has new mud tires and a two inch lift.
i feel really good about it, but what should i be on the lookout for that may not come up in the mechanic's survey?

I had an 09 Forester. The transmissions are pretty stout, but definitely make sure to change the tranny fluid regularly. Just do a drain and fill to start, and then another drain and fill every year. Watch the engine oil level like a hawk, like check every week minimum and change the coolant every 2 or so years. Don't forget to do a gear oil change in the differentials. The front is easy but you need a special filler tube for the back, might be better off having the mechanic doing it. I'm assuming they used an aftermarket improved head gasket on the new engine, maybe not. If so mine blew a head gasket at 170k, but granted I didn't do my due diligence keeping the oil topped up and fresh. Overall just keep the oil/fluids fresh and checked and you shouldn't have much in the way of problems. I can't remember if there were shocks or struts in the rear, either way mine were holding up pretty well at 170k so yours shouldn't be in bad shape. If the car is in good shape and has a new engine it's safe to assume the owner was on top of things.

Using the handbrake for a hill start is practically the same as the pedal in terms of wear, it's not going to hurt anything. Find a slope somewhere secluded and practice until you're good. If you're not good at taking off on flat ground yet, practice that first. You need to have a good feel for the bite point and how to balance the throttle and clutch.

Gearing acts like a torque multiplier at the expense of RPM speed, this is why acceleration is usually the fastest in 1st, but also means the car will decelerate quickly too, hence why it feels like the car is jerky or surging with very little throttle.

A 1GZ-FE (Toyota V12 from the Century) weighs about 150 lbs more than a rover 4.6 HSE, but would it fit in a P38 range rover? (1994-2001)
Someone got one into a miata, and some other dipshits got one into a hilux.
Looked into BMW, Mercedes, and Jaguar V12s but they're all about the same weight as the Toyota, cost more, and are more finicky. I feel like the 1GZ-FE is more attainable and worth putting work into.
Figure I can swap the battery into the rear to offset about 80lbs of the weight. I figure it'll cost much more than I expect, take longer than I expect, and I won't even get most of the shit to work properly in the dash.

I have an old car with a manually tensioned accessory belt via the alternator, but I can't get it to hold tension. Even if I crank down on the bolt with the alternator right about where it should be, when I'm driving it later the car shudders and the battery light comes on for a second. Upon stopping it's obvious the belt lost tension again. What should I do to fix this? I don't want to have it throw the belt while driving, and its also started squealing horribly for the first ~20-30 seconds of running, both hot and cold. There is also obvious belt dust parallel with where it goes.
Otherwise it does it's job fine, even with the belt a bit loose it'll still charge, and all it has to drive are a water pump and alternator so theres not a huge load on it.

Depending on where in the world you are it will be much much easier to source a German V12, since there are plenty of different BMWs and Mercedes with V12s, and as far as I'm aware the 1GZ really only came in the century.
As far as fitting goes, you'll have to do your own research into the sizes of the respective engines. I don't know if you have a 60 or 90 degree V engine and that could certainly change things for better or worse. Lengthwise you're probably looking at a custom firewall unless you're going to copy Audi and have half the engine in front of the front axle.

How many miles are on the car in question? The trans/motor mounts can be worn in, even if they're still good. It can give the illusion the transmission is jerky or the engine is stifled.

Your best bet is to find a gas station near you that has Top Tier gasoline. It already has fuel injector cleaner mixed in, and it's usually only a few cents more a gallon. Other than that, you can buy a kit, or find a mechanic that has one, that lets the engine run straight injector cleaner as a way to clean the EFI system without removing anything. Scotty Kilmer did a video on it. Outside of small motors and older cars there's really no reason to get non-ethanol.

You literally can't. No fuel or fuel additive can possibly help: the fuel never touches the intake manifold or the backside of the valves ever under any circumstances. No oil or oil additive can help, the oil never touches the intake manifold or the backside of the valves.

Just include the hassle of taking off your IM ever 100k miles for a manual cleaning part of the cost of ownership and consider it when choosing a vehicle. It's typically a 5 hour job for me, so I don't mind it much, if you're a wrenchlet it might tip the scales toward a non-GDI car.

Is there a reason fiberglass isn't employed as a structural material? Not an engineer so it might be a dumb question, sorry.
For example, wheels are made of different metals: steel, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys... and then a jump to carbon composite. Same thing for chassis: different metals and then straight to carbon.
Why is glass composite not used? Apparently it has great weight and strength properties, but is not as stiff as carbon. But it is stiffer than aluminum (and lighter and stronger). So why isn't it used more?

It's new, and I compared the length of the new one to the old one before replacing it.
As for the squealing, I put tension on the alternator again and really cranked down on the bolt this time. I was able to drive it around today and it never did the shudder and battery light thing so it must be fine now. I did notice my horrible hackjob of a radiator install (new radiators specifically for this car aren't available domestically) was touching the alternator so I tried to scoot it over a little bit more out of the way, so that probably helps too

Tbh I don't know, not an engineer lol I thought because carbon was super stiff that would be something good to look out for.
From what I'm seeing carbon is actually more brittle than glass fibers though, apparently because it doesn't elongate as much (??)

Make sure you stay on top of your maintenance, change your oil sooner than whatever the manufacturer specifies(most new cars state the oil should be changed every 10k miles but try to change it at half that at least). An oil catch can might also help mitigate the issue. Make sure you use high quality fuel. And finally, give it the good ol Italian tune up every once in a while, that is rev it out and drive it like you stole it.

All this helps with carbon build up but like this anon >>26426909 , carbon build up is inevitable in direct injected engines. Some manufacturers like Toyota and Ford a combination of both direct injection and port injection to eliminate this issue.

You can clean watch some guides on youtube on how to clean your intake valves which isn't too hard to do depending on the car. Or you can take it to a shop to get them cleaned. If you properly maintain your vehicle then you shouldn't have any real issues with carbon build up. You will lose some performance as the valves get dirty though.

What do you guys think about Active and Semi-active suspensions? I'm doing my masters on the topic, but I spend most of my time researching the theoretical aspect. I wonder how much of a crap people who buy cars currently give about the topic. From what I can see, most cars just have a Sport/Comfort mode, which may or may not include changes in the suspension.
Pic related are the Skyhook and Groundhook models, which are two control schemes that dictate how the suspension should behave itself to curb vibrations. Groundhook tries to make the tire more stable, and Skyhook tries to make the chassis more stable. The idea is to calculate the forces on the idealized model and to then command the suspension to behave in a way that makes the target body feel the same force (at the cost of fucking over the other one).
Sport and comfort suspension modes are just static Damper properties changes for the most part for those wondering, they don't necessarily employ these techniques.

I would not be surprised that most people see it as a gimmick, or something expensive that breaks, and enthusiasts who actually track their cars probably see it as something that needs switching out to a standard suspension.

Not to discount the work you're doing, or that it does give an advantage to a road car, but most people just want their shit to do one thing and do it well.

I wouldn't go so far to say they're unreliable but like wear components on a car, they fail eventually and most people are unwilling to shell out a grand or more for a suspension component that only came on that one particular car.

You see this in old air ride systems in Crown Vic/Mercury Grand Marquis. Or the Hydraulic ride systems that came on E38 7 Series. When that shit fails people are more willing to convert over to a conventional system simply becuase some of the failed parts are near unobtainium, or overpriced crap.

Can a temperature gauge barely reading be caused by a poor connection with the temperature sensor in the head? My temp gauge won't even go past this point, even if I still and idle with no airflow (the fan doesn't come on either unless its a really hot day). If I ground out the single wire to the sensor, the gauge will peg at full temp, so I know the gauge itself works. I've tried with a new sensor of the same resistance range and it didn't make a difference.
The wire does not have its original connector, the wire was corroded so I had to put a generic ring terminal on it, but even the smallest one is too big to sit tight on the post of the brass sensor. Does anyone know where I can get a connector for one of those single "pin" brass temperature senders? I'm only seeing results for flat spade terminals, which won't work
I would like to have a working temp gauge at some point soon.

sure, the sender would simply increase/decrease resistance based on the temperature it's reading. look up the spec, use a temperature probe and see if the ohms you get from a multimeter matches the spec, if not could be a bad/incorrect sender. Basically AWD means there's a haldex that needs new fluid every 30k miles and a bevel box, center diff, and rear diff that need fluid changes every 100k. Make sure to get a good quality fluid designed for german cars (like Ravenol) and not just the off the shelf gear oil they sell at auto parts stores.

Do some research on your car and how you’re going to test the pressure. Some cars are nice and easy with a schraeder valve, but you need to get a tester that includes that. Amazon has lot of kits for like $30, they’re shitty Chinesium but they should be accurate enough to tell you whether or not the pump is fucked. Sometimes my engine sounds kind of anemic when I accelerate, especially when turning.
It doesn't do it all the time though. Last year it was really bad and I think that was due to a power steering fluid leak. I have lean codes (air/fuel mix has too much air) Is the following info 100% indicative of a vacuum leak? Pic is my short term fuel trims. At idle with engine cool they were hovering around +10. The first drop is a steady 2500 rpm and they drop to around +/- 3. Second drop is 3000 rpm and similar. After the engine warmed up idle trims went even higher around +12 to 15.
My long term fuel trims are sitting around +16 to 18 at idle and during the 2500/3000 change dropped to +8 to 10.
I did a smoke test and only saw a significant amount of smoke from my idle air control valve. After that I sprayed the shit out of the IAC with carb spray and didn't hear a single change in engine sound. Not sure how that would happen. Does this data guarantee an air leak or should I also move to the fuel delivery system (fuel pump/injectors)? The thing pissing me off is I have none of the major issues in every video watch. Idle sounds fine, no stalling, instant power. By all accounts my car runs just fine but I apparently have a serious lean condition.
Last thing is the OBD app I use does checks on O2 sensors and all had the green light so they should be functioning properly.
Literally any advice because this is driving me insane.

Even if your IAC is bad, it shouldn't be leaking smoke. Check the gasket/seal around it, and check the housing for cracks. I bet this is your problem.

Other less likely things that can cause a lean condition: dirty/bad MAF, bad O2 sensor (can be bad even if it 'tests good'), clogged injectors

Normally there is some other anti-theft light that comes on while doing that shit, the CEL is normally emissions and engine stuff. Get a code reader or have them do it at Vatozone to see what it is. If it is somehow related to the anti-theft, tell them to clear it and go on with yout life. Or unplug your battery for a few minutes and see if the CEL comes back.

You can find cheap meters that work for <$10 and decent meters for <$30 these days, and they will help diagnose so many things

Fwiw I think that’s a little bit of a strange way to do it. I would use the meter in the same spot but be measuring “DC A” or “DC mA”, maybe that method is testing voltage drop or something? And a basic test light won’t work for this unless it’s a fancy one with a voltmeter on there, and even then I’m not sure if you will get a voltage reading between the - cable and - terminial. Somebody smarter will probably answer it but you won’t know because dumb people will argue over it.

Yeah nvm that way is a little bit retarded. This car doesn’t have a parasitic draw issue, but there is something using electricity while the car is off so you’re going to get a voltage reading there as the ECU or clock or something still wants to use power when the car is off. If you pull fuses until you get 0.0V, you’re going to be chasing down your radio clock for parasitic draw even though is like 0.05mA or something stupid low.

Find a better guide or Youtube video that tells you to use the multimeter in the A or mA setting. They might even want you to go through the fuse box instead of the battery. You want to look for unnecessarily high current to find the parasitic draw. If you test for current on one of the battery posts to the battery terminal, you pull fuses until the current drops off, and that’s going to be the circuit the draw is on so you can track it down more easily.

I think I fixed a vacuum leak causing high short term fuel trim. They look fine now but my long terms are still way positive. I've done about 40 miles since fixing. Long terms make less sense to me than short terms but supposedly they get stored in memory and are used to learn patterns. Automatics do the shifting for you.
With the exception of some limited models, you can only ever manually select 1st or 2nd gear. Neither is a high gear.
If you place the car in 'D' it will be in the lowest gear.

Take off one of the battery clamps, run the meter in the DC Amps setting between the battery post and the clamp (with the key off, don’t try to start the car or anything or you will def blow the fuse if not the meter). You should see some sort of reading, not sure if it’s like 0.5A or less depending on how bad the drain is. Then pull fuses one at a time and when you find the circuit the drain is on, the current should drop real low when that fuse is pulled. You’re not going to get to zero amps completely because the car’s clock and computer still draw a tiny bit of power, Google says like 50mA is a healthy amount, with if you’re in the “10A” range on the meter, that’s 0.05A.

I've checked the cv joints and the boots appear to be perfectly intact. No grease marks indicating seepage out of cracked rubber or anything like that.

Of course most of them are going to have that swapped out for an aftermarket system at this point. The only thing you need to be wary of and check is to see if the system was installed properly, with no twisted or exposed wires. What you want to see is either soldered with heat shrink tubing, or butt connectors with proper crimps into a crossover female Metra or similar connector into the factory male connector.

block looks fine, internals will shit themselves long before the block does though. The weak point of the engine will almost certainly be the rods, the pistons will probably be fine for the power you can get out of it but will be too high compression. If you boost it in stock form expect maybe 150 at a guess, if you can somehow get the compression down a bit.

Generally they're not technically hard to pull, but you'll likely still be wore the fuck out between separating the CV from the knuckle, and possibly pulling it from the inner shaft. The last CV's I changed required an engineers hammer a piece of wood and couple hours of banging it against the knuckle to get it off the strut, and then another 30mins banging the old CV off the inner shaft, then about the same amount of time getting everything back together.

all in all, i think i now that i actually know wtf to do, i could get it done in 15-30 mins tops. I was honestly surprised at how removing the shaft itself was just yanking it out of the transaxle.

How much did you pay for it? If you buy a 2005 anything for like <$5000, bring it to the same shop and they will tell you that you need just as much work done. That’s the norm with a nearly 20 year old car.

The only way you will do better is if you find one of those snowflake cars from an old person who just died and had their 2005 Camry garage kept and serviced at the dealer once a year whether it needed it or not. But it’s going to take some time to find that gem car.

And then if the struts are that bad and it’s a hard ride, ask a friend to help you replace those if you’re not confident to do it yourself.

carbs are weird.
btw the secondary butterfly wasn't opening which is why i opened the thing up. it was jammed shut. i managed to free it so much that i could suck on the diaphragm and it opened the secondary, but it doesn't open when on the car itself. when i turn it by hand it doesn't close completely, causing a very high idle. i guess i ddin't free it up enough 7mmHg of vacuum doesn't cut it.
how do i lube it to make it even easier to turn?

Had one of the diesel fuel injectors replaced in a volvo v50 1.6 DrivE (2011).
Took a longer trip and after like 500km as I was decelarating near some road repairs a check engine came up.
Scanned it as I was P02E4, which means stuck open condition of the diesel intake air flow control.
I'm concerned, because this issue can lead to the DPF not regenerating.
I erased the code and hopefully it won't return. If it does return, how expensive of a repair am I looking at?

You'll need a new air doser valve, or whatever the fuck they call it. Basically its a throttle valve in the inlet, mainly used for preventing engine shudder on shutdown. Don't know how it could be used in dpf regen, I guess allowing the engine to run richer/leaner than usual? Regardless, if it's like mine (1.6tdci fiesta, same basic engine) its pretty easy to remove, you decouple the hoses from either end, disconnect the solenoid and unbolt it from the engine. The worst bit will be the wiring harness clips, again if your engine is like mine (yours is an 8v not 16v, so might be a bit easier to get at stuff) You might not even need a replacement, it could just need a good clean.

This is the cunt right here. Looks easier to get at than mine, just a few 8mm bolts, a couple of hose clamps and a plug. Those 8mm bolts will be right bastards to get at, there's 4 in total so 2 hidden at the back of the valve. You should be able to move the lower boost hose out of the way to get at those. If you do need a replacement search for a volvo 1.6 drive throttle body, though you might be able to get the same thing cheaper if you search for 1.6hdi throttle body or 1.6tdci throttle body.

Even after letting it sit and idle for 5 minutes, then driving around the neighborhood, my gauge never crossed this point. Both upper and lower hoses are hot, and the radiator is also hot on both ends, so no clogs or broken thermostat. But when I turned the car off, then turned the key to run, the gauge went right up to about the middle of the gauge like it should.

The gauge works as it should, because it pegs on hot if you ground the wire to the sender on the negative battery terminal. The connection on the temperature sender itself is corrosion free and solid. I do have a new temperature sender, but I don't think the sender is the problem since the temperature gauge is in the middle when the engine isn't running.

It's a lean code and sometimes a cylinder misfire code (all 4 cylinders) will show up. I replaced the intake manifold gasket/spark plugs recently and that helped decrease the vibrations/low idle when warmed up, but didn't completely get rid of it. The code only comes up when the car is at operating temperature

I took it to a shop before and they used a smoke machine, but didn't find any leaks, so I guess next step is to clean/replace fuel injectors right?

You might also try replacing the fuel filter, maybe its clogged and the pump is not sending as much fuel up to the injectors as it should be

The only argument would be that brakes are a ~$200 wear part and your engine is a ~$3k+ part that isn't easily repaired once it's worn out.
The wear you put on the engine via engine braking isn't much though because the cylinders stay cool due to pumping fast while burning barely any fuel.

get the resistance values from the service manual and check the temperature of your engine with an ir thermometer and compare it to the ohm reading you get on the temp sensor. if it's ok, suspect wiring, if it's wrong, suspect either the sensor or possibly inside the housing there is a bunch of radiator crud insulating the sensor that needs to be cleaned out.

My car was stolen a couple days ago but it was recovered. I was able to drive it home since it was drivable and I didn't want to pay for the impound/tow fees. It had a CEL that was never there before but it cleared itself out (I told insurance about this). Now it's back and the car is in limp mode. I scanned the code and it's the fuel pump solenoid. I tried to ask for a car on facebook marketplace (old car from 85'). I was curious and asked about the mileage because I've seen the same model with varying mileages some with better than others.
The guy didn't answer the question and insulted me and instantly blocked me.

Would any of you guys be offended if you sold your really old car and someone asked for the mileage?
(I honestly don't know, this might be like an unspoken rule or the guy got self conscious by his car having a lot of mileage even though that is to be expected from an old car)
