Yeah but I mean, if you claim that nothing on our side works, you can't choose to only look to one place for evidence and not another.

Anyways, as far as America and the enlightenment goes, I blame Protestants and the separation of church and state. There was no higher authority or sense of greater good to provide incentive for the collective, so everyone became content in chasing all their own individual interests.
Initially it worked because they did have that, in a fanaticism for their ideology, but this wasn't enshrined in the culture so it could pass generation to generation like theological doctrine does.
