I don't think the downward slope in Shiva's plots are solid indications of fraud. There may be other explanations for the sloping line. But I do think vertical shifts in the plot are suspicious. In a precinct where the straight part ticket was 50-50, you would expect to see that reflected roughly in the individual candidate vote as well.

So that fact that when you add discrete randomized integers and add them in groups the totals of those groups will zenos paradox onto the benford distribution curve is a mathematically proven Law. Big L. This has applications in fraud detection because it will show that numbers were not naturally generated. You will never be a woman.. A similar method of detection is even/odd distribution where we check the number of even and odd last digit. This has to do with how adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing produce even and odd numbers.

Doesn't it depend on what the slope is? If the slope is pretty linear with slope approximately 1 that's fine. But if Biden's slope is artificially elevated while Trump's is lowered by the same amount. That's vote swapping.

There is a book called 'How to Lie with Statistics' that you should read. One of the flags for lying with statistics is misrepresenting mathematical models as 'Laws'. Obviously this is just a starting point but as a rule of thumb I have not found it to fail. And Bedford is a rule of thumb with too many exceptions & suppositions to be a 'Law' in mathematics. Doesn't mean its not useful within its limits.

The water system i work for collects data from sensors and gauges throughout the system. Looking for leaks using this data is complicated but involves (sometimes) models similar to Benford but at best they work 75% of the time and it is impossible to figure out why. It's not just me. I don't develop these models I just use them. People like The American Water Works Association hire people with PHd's to do this. At training seminars they make it very clear why they prefer to use Laws and what it means. Benford is not a Law and should not be referred to as such or used as such. Unless he made a recent breakthrough I am not familiar with. Did he?

Populations change constantly. There are Bell curves involving age that complicate the frequency with which a person votes and how. People move around. Most places experience population growth but not always. You would have to determine ethnic backgrounds etc. The longer the intervals between voting the more complicated it becomes. A far better analysis would be to throw out the "difference" part all together as this makes it harder to interpret, and compare straight ticket ballots to split ticket ballots directly.
I've done this in South Carolina (another state with straight ticket voting), and my conclusion was that split ticket ballots we're nearly always closer to the mean than straight ticket ballots. I would expect this, as split ticket voters are probably less partisan (almost by definition).
I think shiva's "knees" result from demographic differences in heavily Democrat precincts that make them stickier for Biden. The lowest republican straight ticket precincts are probably coon-town, and they follow a different voting pattern than other precincts.
