>>10679238I am working the graveyard shift. I don't have friends. Someone who doesn't even want to talk to me keeps interrupting my reading. I'm trying to keep occupied but it is increasingly difficult. Every day, I bring books about solitude: Too Loud a Solitude, The Strange Library, IQ84, Kafka on the Shore, and more. All of these books are calculated and deliberately sorted in my duffel bag. I spent a lot of time researching them. I just want to read them in peace at work. The doors to the building are made of iron, the shiny metal bar needs to be pressed to relieve the tumblers and activate the locks, so that the depression can sigh against the force placed on the door. It's a very quiet door. Even the lighting is dim enough that I am allowed to read undisturbed. The floor is laminated with a thick form of polylaminate, and even that is covered with a sort of child-friendly carpet so as to eliminate noise and acoustics. It's a very good environment to read books in. Despite all the perfect boundaries and utilities for reading, I work behind a desk, where my inventory and personnel is kept recorded in a book. Other than keeping track of who comes in and out, I am relatively unbothered, and these books are my only way of enjoying my shift properly.
