Oh, it's important to note that Daughter of the Drow was written in 1995, back when The Complete Book of Elves was the standard on elf aging, which established that elves take about 25 years to reach the human equivalent of 15, so Liriel being in her mid-to-late 30s is like the human equivalent of being 16 or 17. None of this 4e/5e nonsense that elves reach adulthood as fast as humans, nor the Pathfinder admittedly kind of cool standard that elves really do take 110 years to reach the human equivalent of 15.

First person to try and bring up chad-zak is a faggot, since Daughter of the Drow significantly predates that, too.

You can counter this by having the female adventurers actually have successful adventures, but you're going to need that to be the standard rather than the exception. Better than 60% odds. Which causes two problems.

One, you're gonna be bleeding cash, and also literally bleeding as you feed monsters into these adventurers.
Two, you're literally training them to be monster killers, and then hoping that you'll be able to overpower them.

I mean at that point why not just invest in training your own monsters instead of adventurers and then doing an old fashioned raid instead? Keep the treasure you already have, get more treasure, and get some females who haven't been trained how to kill you.

Sure, you could have them settling a great philosophical question that had stumped the scholars for a while. Making an important scientific discovery or inventing a new thing which solves a common problem could also work.

Potentially you could also have all the princes put into some sort of maze/"escape room"esque thing in which they have to work together to escape and spy on them to see if anyone becomes the natural leader of the group.

As a unified force? No, fuck that. Each thunderwarrior has a seething hatred for both the Imperium of Man since and the forces of Chaos.
They've seen the horrors of Big E's big betrayal and how that was mimicked by Horus. They saw how the Imperium fell into the hellscape it has become.
They are one man armies waging one man wars across the Imperium if anything at all.
They also FUCKING HATE space marines, even more than how Chaos's Veterans of the Long War hate the Imperium's Marines.
As pointed out in this thread their biggest weakness was while they were made better than marines in effectively ever way for individual combat they were very much prone to health issues from that. If it was possible for them to survive they would likely outlive marines and become myths and horror stories in the Imperium.
I've had two appear in my 10+ years of running 40k RPGs. Once in Rogue Trader the group ended up on a Feudal World being raided by Dark Eldar so learned of and then had to petition the Giant in the Mountain for aid. He did not take kindly to the Missionary getting preachy and nearly came to blows when he called the Emperor 'The Betrayer'.
The other appeared in Deathwatch and was stalking both the PC killteam and a Alpha Legion squad they were hunting down on an ork infested Hive World.
The Thunder Warriors exist for the sole purpose of showing that the Emperor doesn't give a fuck about his troops if they are amazing individual warriors, he wants lock step and regimented soldiers. The Thunder Warriors were the former while the Adeptus Astartes were the later.

To play devil's advocate, a lot of Astartes Legions are noted to be very 'individualistic' so to speak, or otherwise can be very headstrong and go against the orders of their superiors

Space Wolves come to mind, ditto White Scars; But heck, a lot of legions, even the OG Dark Angels, aren't unable to be 'human' or ignore orders (at least where the Fallen are involved with the Dark Angels example)

One other concept or idea I'd heard about was having Custodes produce their own stable version of Cataegis as 'elite shock troops', perhaps being a shield-host composed of good 'counts-as' in regards to function, aesthetic, and tabletop stats. For example, you'd have Sagittarum Guard via their bolters/Misericordia, Aquilon Terminators via their usage of Solerite Power Gauntlets that were the weapons of choice for the elite amongst the Cataegis, and finally a Blade Champion HQ or something to represent their niche as CQC fighters that were very specialized in that regard. Hell, there's an entire caste of Custodes called 'Thranatoi' that are legit shock-troops to begin with, even having it in the name; Maybe have said Shield Host be derived/focused on this combat doctrine.

As for origins, perhaps you could say the Custodes find Arik Taranis' gene-work after the big heresy and-figuring that it's WAY too contrived of a coincidence that the Emperor's left-hand man finds a perfectly functioning gene lab in Terran slums and manages to fix up their design flaws, so they save it rather than purge it (and potentially any 'successors' Taranis might have made). Or simply that these guys are composed of the more 'versatile' Legions of Thunder Warriors; If we're going off the idea that the twenty legions of Cataegis were approximate to the twenty legions of Astartes, then maybe the more 'jack of all trades Ultramarines legion' weren't completely purged as opposed to the even more berserk 'War Hounds/World Eater Legion'.
