If you want to DIY buy some foam, blend that shit up, add paint. Its far cheaper. But, if you can't do that. Model Train Stores, Online terrian and mini stores all usually have it.

Matches with the rest of the model, though it kind of looks like it's missing a tad more contrast / depth. Also that top spike should be the same color as the handle IMO

Did you use an airbrush or did you brush it on? Regardless that primer can sometimes have issues with adhesion especially on corners/edges, which personally I have found to be with certain bottles. Apparently those primers can have an issue if they ever froze at some point.

The primer itself wasn't Ghost Grey by any chance was it?

Working on this exalted sorcerer kitbash, does the positioning of the cloak look awkward? Tried dremeling holes into it underneath to make it sit better, but I'm not sure if it still looks wonky. Also possible that you might have handled it before it was completely dry. Or if you thinned the primer at all for airbrushing then you might have over thinned. But it could also just be the specific bottle of primer.

I have found that using a 0.5mm is good for priming. The primer itself doesn't really need thinning, but you want to use a little flow improver to help prevent drying/clogging in the airbrush. If you over thin the primer you will have issues with it running over surfaces and collecting in recesses. It generally is never as thick as it actually looks like going on as it will shrink after drying.

Vallejo flow improver is basically miracle liquid. If you've got some it couldn't hurt. How did the primer fucked up? I've only used vallejo stuff so far but I heard stynlrez was the way to go.

The fleshshade and plaguebearer flesh are good for speed fainting flesh.

Black Templar has the most millage.

Dark Angel Green and ultramarine are good replacement base paints, or for adding a painted look to metallics.

Depends on what I am trying to achieve. You should never use contrast a one coat solution in every use case. For example wyldwood contrast is really good for any type of wood. So I use it if I need to paint bark or any type of wood for that matter.

Ah, by neutral I mean desaturated. Space wolf grey, for instance, is a nice soft blue grey that you'd probably see used on an industrial silo. I haven't used typhus corrosion myself, but of it's anything like ryza rust then yes. Another thing you can do is sponge on a metallic to represent spots where the paint chipped away.

The buildings in that dropzone commander pic are actually a great reference point for your terrain - they're colorful, but not too saturated so they don't draw too much attention. The dark streaks on the buildings are also nice, on your large flat surfaces you can do something similar to represent oil or grime drips.

Recasting some primaris lieutenants tomorrow, just finished cleaning up the master/ making it pose friendly.

I have a degree in manufacturing (industrial design) and when i saw the prices of minis, my fucking heart dropped. I havent played in a decade, and 10 of the new marines is fucking $100 AUD??? And we live right next to china, it makes zero sense.

So fuck 'em.

What's the best way of stripping some old BFG cruisers back to bare plastic. I've only stripped metal in the past so am sure what I normally use will melt them and ruin the detail.

It can work as a base, or an almost all in one paint.

Example is like death watch. Grey primer, drybrush white, and base in black. Boom, you armor looks like mid tier highlights at 1/4 the time.

Want to include some vehicles as terrain for my Kill Team stuff. I could just print stuff out and make it, but at the scale I am thinking of it might be more cost efficient (and definitely more time efficient) to just use toys that I repaint. so i have a beginner question:
i got some fyling units. but the transparent pillar things ment to make them "fly" arent really doing their job. the holes at the bottom of the models are either too wide or the pillars are too short or bouth because the pillars dont properly conncet. my models touch their bases and are way too close to the ground ofr the illusion of flight. am i doing something wrong or do i need to buy some transparent thicker and longer pillars online because GW is giving me bad parts?

They have their uses but as other anons said, never use them for smooth surfaces, they will most likely look terrible.
One tip for Contrast: paint them over a metallic basecoat for a great colored-metallic effect.
Here's my experience with those I have:
Wyldwood: Wood and leather. Incredibly well coverage. You can even paint it over other colors, it covers so well.
Black Templar: black leather/other materials, heavier Nuln Oil shading, panel lining/recess shading. Great coverage as well, the consistency of Contrast paints is great for recess shading.
Basilicanum Grey: grey furs, can even work as replacement for silver metallics
Space Wolves Grey: perfect for denim!
Iyanden Yellow: I despise painting yellow with usual paints because I haven't found a paint that covers well and smoothly so this is a good way for me to employ yellow in my paint schemes
Flesh Tearers Red: cloth, armor, accessories, everything! Besides Wyldwood, one of my favorite Contrast paints. If you dilute it, it makes for fantastic blood/inflammation effects as well, great for regular wounds and details on Nurgle units.
Gryph-hound Orange: See Iyanden Yellow
Talassar Blue: it's a very bright blue, you can't cover mistakes with it but over a clean basecoat it looks great
Creed Camo: wonderful green color. I use it for clothes, mantles, capes and so on.
Skeleton Horde: another of my favorites. It works well for bones as well as for sickly skin color. Doesn't cover well of course
Guilliman Flesh: a nice, lighter skin color. After watching Duncan's Contrast video I now also use it for shading gold/bronze/brass
Darkoath Flesh: a darker skin color, works well
Apothecary White: yellow isn't the only color I dislike to paint, white is the other one. I thought Apothecary White could solve my problems and it does so, in a way. It shades quite well but re-highlight with white.

I bought the entire line on release. I find there's two distinctly different styles of contrast paint within the line, some are very lightly pigmented(aethermatic, warp lightning, magos purple, etc) and others are very densely pigmented(talassar, dark Angels green, and shyish purple, etc). I'm not really a fan of applying the more densely pigmented formulas as heavy as gw suggests, leaning more towards 2x thinner glazes vs one heavy glaze/wash. The formulas that are less densely pigmented can be used as gw intends with the one heavy wash/glaze, but are also really fun to use for thin glazes/recess shades. I personally fell in love with basilicanum grey as an alternative for nuln oil as it's much lighter in tone, and less prone to coffee staining.

Pic related has some form of contrast paint being used on every material. The dress is contrast over zenithal and the magic smoke is contrast over pure white ink. Both use the same recipe of glazes of basilicanum, magos purple, shyish purple, and aethermatic blue. I thin the shyish quite heavily as it's very dark.

The bronze would probably blend in to much would the the rest of the mini unless you make it looked oxidated like that other anon said. Weathered grey could work well and not get drowned out in the other colors.

I have Lady Olynder in my possession, when the time comes, she'll be getting converted into a C'Tan shard. I got her partially assembled, essentially everything but the flowers and banshees which I'll replace with something more Necron-y. It'll be awhile before I've gone through enough of my backlog to get to her, so until then I figure I'd try picking /tg/'s rotten brains for ideas on how such a conversion might work. I know I'll be replacing the top of the staff with something necron-ish, probably add some green or some other color of eldritch lightning in place of the flowers she'd have surrounding her. Perhaps even something resembling wraiths flying around her like the banshees she'd normally have.

Any of you folks have any ideas?

When I paint minis I usually paint the parts that require dry brushing first, and then paint everything else. This is because dry brushing is inherently messy and bits of paint that land on unpainted parts can easily be painted over. However, the disadvantage of this is that if in the subsequent painting I accidentally get some paint on a part that was already dry brushed and finished, then it is harder to fix that mistake due to the all of the layers that have been added.

An alternative to this is to base coat everything, then wash everything, and then very carefully dry brush the parts that you want. Which method do you use?

There's something about the contrast in views here that really tickles me. Between Saint Duncan painting a miniature of a fairly well known pop culture character, and two older gay men who live on a canal boat who just got a new puppy.

They have about half his subs too. It's odd, Duncan's channel is fairly new but it has the "sub bloat" you'd associate with an old, dwindling channel.

I've heard folks sometimes use the thicker but still pliable metal in which certain squeeze-tube products come packaged - stuff like anchovy paste and antibiotic ointment. I've always just used thick paper, myself.

Thanks. I'm curious where it looks thick. Building up layers of yellow was a labor, but it could be the primer as I had to strip and reprime the mini. Something didn't feel right with the primer, and there was some cracking deep in the cloak recesses afterwards.

On second look, it's less that it looks thick and more that there are some areas where more defined shadows might have helped. The spaces between the fingers on his gauntlet, for example.

seconding based Flesh Tearers red, it is my go-to for shading/washing red. Looks great over khorne red, hot tip.
Blood angels red is okay too but where it really shines is it smells the most like the old citadel inks out of any of the current line.

Nazdreg yellow and snakebite leather are both good for either doing cheapo NMM effects or for getting a new tone over metallics.

AVOID militarum green, it is super opaque and separates like a bitch.

Your green needs shading (especially in the neck cavity). And yeah id tone back the highlights, or make them thinner. Or both.

Typhus, maybe carefully cut off/putty over any vents, hoses etc. on the armor/scythe to give him a more plate armor look? same with the LoC, but he'd require less de-futuring.

It means /wip/ is truly /wip/ and not /warhammer-in-progress/.

It also means more people exposed to 3D printing. If someone can make a 3D printed file like the one I posted look great at a fraction of the cost of a GW mini, then other people are going to catch on that 3D printing is a viable way to create miniatures for their games.

Guys how to do you paint your commissars? Do you paint them matching your army color or do you gives them the standard red, black, and gold look.

I'm torn because fluff wise I know they are simply assigned and have no real allegiance to that specific regiment but I at the same time I want them to match the army.

I swapped to using open camera, it doesnt do weird saturation stuff and sharpen
