I know this is bait, but in a traditional card game with dedicated resources, you'd have to fill your deck with "DEFEND" cards that do literally nothing except block damage. Just a big shield icon with a bold number on it taking up the entire cars.

Most card games involve resource management, board state, and tempo, among other aspects. Fab is VERY tempo heavy, but tempo is also the hardest of the 3 to identify without knowing how the game works. Even experienced players won't always be able to determine the game tempo just by a still snapshot. It's unironically the calculus of card games.

Fab really tries to emphasize tempo control as the most visceral component of the gameplay. By design, they wanted it to feel like a real fight and have players feel strongest at the start ofnthe game, instead of building board up like in MTG or most other games. So board state is usually about which player looks less fucked up. Resource management is pretty much directly a component of tempo as well.

So Fab becomes a game where you have to look at your scenario and derive enjoyment because you found a way make an opponent commit an extra card to their attack for the same result. This can put them on the defensive because they might not have a card to set in arsenal or they have 1 less card to defend. Maybe this forces them to use equipment to defend which is an emergency button to block combos.

You gotta enjoy the little things in Fab. I use to be a big Overwatch players, and sometimes a massive play would be forcing the enemy team to walk a few feet too far to the right. Literally just a few steps. Once you understood stuff like that it felt awesome to do tiny things that could win an entire team fight. But I think it's totally fair for an onlooker to say "uh yeah that one dude got 3 headshots" and focus on that.

ScoreZ hypercasual here, and it’s kind of true for how I play the game which is why I like blue and black so much. No “resources” in the traditional sense but still largely dedicated Stabs and Shields.

That said, is it that true of other games? I think a lot of UVS/UFS cards have the block maneuvers in addition to being what they are, and monster games that don’t take DM’s Blocker paradigm basically allow units to alternate between stab and shield roles even if they’re shit at one or the other. What games do you think exemplify that idea that traditional resource cards are Just Shields? I feel like YGO traps might, but they’re basically free.

I genuinely don't understand what you're trying to say here. What is the link between dedicated resources and Defense not able to be an aspect of what a card can do?

The alternative in context would be dedicated offensive and defensive cards, and I was likening dedicated defensive cards to shit like lands or energy. Cards with a big symbol that might read "Blocks 4 damage" and do basically nothing else. Defense reactions in FaB can only be interesting because every other card could block, which let's them having strong effects.

I think there's a similar criticism to Duel Masters, where some players didn't like having to use their creatures and spells as their mana cards, even though it reduces mana drought or mana flood by a huge amount.

Part of seeing the fun of a game like this is understanding that your opponent is in the same position. They'd love to just drop those 3 bolts just like you, but they need to be worried about your plans. A good play means you might only use 1 bolt offensively, but your opponent drops 0 bolts on their next turn.

I’m heavily biased towards 07 because they brought some of my favorite LRIG back and gave them decent outfits, but the designs besides those are nice too.

04/05 have a lot of standouts to me, both LRIG and SIGNI. Draco, Eclipse Honeyto, Muzica, Hirana (awful card, cute pic), Madoka, Caesar, Satyr, BO, Culelebre, Douman, Deus, and the multicolor angel vanillas to name a few. 06/07 have the memoria SIGNI that are versions of the old LRIG as SIGNI, each with two different arts at every rarity. A lot of them tend to be really good for gameplay too but that’s the icing on the cake since they did a good job with those card arts.

Love this idea. Loved accessories in Wixoss because they gave your ener zone so many options the way black got to use the trash. The green decks I make in Diva never really use the ener zone that way but my buddy’s good at building around that.

i swear, the success in the west in wixoss is straight up hinging on open!batoru launching.
if we get a working sim a lot of gentiles will get exposed to the game, one piece basically had the app as an advertisement, and it worked gangbusters.

I don't feel so sure about some of the "staples" of FAB being that great in the future.

Command and conquer and enlightened strike specifically, I feel like some decks just run them as filler to meet the deck size limit.
I can see art of war being good long term.
I'd say crown of providence is probably going to stay good until it's powercrept in like 2-3 years, but I don't see it staying as some uber powerful legacy card as they keep releasing sets.

On the fence about mask of momentum, could go either way.
Tunic I think LSS always wants to keep as an option because its pretty iconic but I can see it slowly get more and more sidegrades.

Storm striders I feel will always stay good, really ridiculous effect.

Stuff I feel is underrated is the generic majestic sideboard cards, like the upcoming down and dirty. It will probably stay relevant as long as they make phantasm heroes.

I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have any, /acg/

As long as there are decks that run defense reactions it will be good. It also directly counters some classes like Ranger (RIP Riptide)

2 cards for 7 damage is already above rate before you consider the flexibility ES offers, it's one of the strongest generic majestics for a reason and I doubt we will get much stronger cards without massive power creep.

only buy sealed cases, never buy loose boxes.

I've opened 4+ cases of each set, and generally it's 1 legendary per case, lose boxes are usualy sold from people who get that legendary and sell the rest.

I have opened "glitch" boxes with multiple legendries but they are the minority.

if you can find first edition buy those, even if they are 30 bucks more a box.

All 3 classes in outsiders were low tier in the meta.

Ninja and Ranger got Solid upgrades.

Assassins feel like the original design was Contract Arakni with Plague reactions, Contracts, and Recursive Equipment. (a complete package) but it felt too strong in the draft enviroment and potentially CC so they broke the class in half, gatekept strong reactions with Stealth and gave us WE WUZuri.

Tunic is a sidegrade for most classes already, it's power comes in it's flexibility, as 1 resource can be used in a variety of ways, I don't think they will ever make something better than it resource wise.

Crown of Prov is a bit overrated, for some classes and march ups crown of dominion and skullcap are better.

Stormstriders are a singular piece of equipment that wizards are balanced around, it will never be banned again; because when it got banned before kano went to dumpster tier.

CnC is a strong card, it's over valued in alot of decks though, for example Assassin, which has LWN, and Inertia tokens now. CNC is just overkill on threatening the arsenal for that class.

E-strike is just good flexibility filler, they will never print a better generic than it, but class cards could be.

Mask of Momentum and Lynx are good for different situations, Lynx is strong in Fai because you can guarantee 6 damage with it via Lavaburst. Mask is better for non-fai ninjas.

I'm aiming to try and main Arakni going forward until they introduce necromancer.

Down and Dirty has a really good deck teck with Codex of Fraility on Assassin where we can constantly put it into Arsenal and block out Illusionists with it. and yeah with the Upcoming Prism 2.0 it will be even more relevant.

You could go as far as arguing that Storm Striders is actually a class, and "Wizard" is just what they write on the cards for flavor. Assuming we don't see downright cynical powercreep, Striders will be a big deal until they (one day) get banned to open up more design space.

Not that anon, but going from dealing 4-6ish blind vs dealing 10-12ish for a low ball at instant speed, after they committed 2-3 cards on an attack, ends the game pretty quick. I have surprise killed most of my wins with them.

I think Cleric needs to have a healing gimmick to really feel right, but that doesn't mean it needs to heal a lot. It just has to feel impactful.
Personally I really want to see a pure arcane damage class that is explicitly *not* allowed to play at instant speed.My hope is Cleric gets to fill that niche with a healing subtheme. And also gets hot femboy heroes

Undoing everything the enemy does is a badfeel, you can have healing, but it needs to be specific, and lower the value of the cards that do it, beyond a grind out style, it doesnt let you do much. Can't really blame you. This sets definitely been a let down following the previous set. The prerelease was garbage because most of the cards don't work without their intended ruler. And the design is very restrictive all around. Ulga's Sword of Progression/Replicant is probably the most interesting part of the set. Definitely not a fan of this super restrictive design philosophy though.

I wouldn't mind that, but it seems they've been focused on finding something that works and avoiding past mistakes as much as possible. The intense power creep seems to be part of this "reboot" and they're just experimenting with mechanics/gimmicks and distribution to find a sweet spot at this point. Since they made Wanderer the only supported format, there's no real way they can reset and go back in power level. The only way I could see it is reinstating New Frontiers, but with Wanderer being the primary focus, cards will need to continue being pushed AF anyways.

The second one from February I cant even figure out how one wins with its territory

Red-Black
While Sakuya is cute her card and playstyle put cards in opponents hand meaning you are killing yourself

The first ace just has a bouncing effect nothing that controllish
Margrea on the otherhand needs more field nuking support

Blue-Black
The omni choice effect needs more broken shit for the first ace
The second Ace I think its called Lyra has a weird playstyle where you erase your grave to get effects but nothing game winning

I don't necessarily agree on Margareta, Margeria, Sakuya and Iora. I think those 4 decks are quite capable on their own and can win from the results that I have seen.
Iora maybe less so since Vulbabylon is a better option currently than the other 2 but a lot of her Black-Blue cards see play in all 3 builds. And Sakuya doesn't care about making the opponent draw cards anymore because she has so much high power output and control options she can pick apart boards with ease. And she can draw as much as the opponent now so she can get into her combo pieces quickly. One of her cards also negates the whole "sacrifice a life to draw" effect of her territory too.
Margeria deals 10000 damage effectively with her and her territory to the opponent's board every turn so I'm not sure she needs more.
Margereta is good at generating advantage, building boards and grinding the game out.

Everything else I can agree is lacking in some areas and needs more support. I genuinely think Liu Bei has a lot of potential. The territory straight up buffs everything and gives it multiple hits so you can easily OTK. It might be the best OTK deck in the game when it releases depending on what else is shown in the set. Lyra and Yuuma are confirmed getting more support so that should make both of them better too.

One thing to realize about riptide is that there needs to be three things that must come out of your sealed pulls, and that includes decent traps, lots of cards to play from hand to use his effect and arrows that can bring you the win. He can still be played with just two of those things, but that's his ideal set up. Without traps you don't get free damage, without cards played from hand you can't use his free arsenal and without arrows you won't be threatening lethal. If he's dominating an event, it's because he got his trio.

The interaction you were asking about has the ability banish a card face down before flipping it face up as it resolves. You mean the horizontal card in the middle? That's a "Piece" card. In layman's terms it's like your 3 LRIG's ultimate team move that you can activate when you've fulfilled the [Use Conditions] and pay the ENER cost (top left corner, in your case '8')
Yes all starter decks have the same cards, no randomness, just like with most games.
I think the colors are basically you are only allowed to use cards that are the same type as your 3 LRIGs. So for you, Green, Red, Blue. When a SIGNI (creatures, units, etc.) is destroyed it enters your ENER zone and becomes a 1 time use point of Mana to pay for costs, such as the Piece card. It's like a Treasure token if you play MTG.

Also welcome to the coom. Just as a heads up the name is pronounced Wee-cross which is very important to know so you can intentionally trigger other people on /acg/ by claiming it's Wick-aws

I initially resisted getting all of the decks because some of the LRIGs (girl spelled backwards) I felt weren’t to my taste. But I decided to give them all a chance — and I’m glad I did because some of the supporting girls and LRIG designs I really liked in a deck (Ancient Surprise, this one) I thought I wouldn’t like that much. I could have looked up the cards but I wanted to surprise myself with an initial raw reaction. Glad I did it this way.

This is an interesting idea. Have a free "launch" tournament, where everyone who participates gets a starter deck and run a sealed event, seems like a great way to get people into a game.

Am I sick of magic or am I sick of card games inherently? I'm fairly new to magic but I'm already burnt out by how many cards and mechanics there are, wizards awful anti consumer practices, gameplay of magic being very boring and not interactive, the whole land system is flawed etc.

Yes this set is absolutely fantastic, yes it fixes my favorite class up to be a contender in the coming months and yes I'm going to praise James White, creator of the hit classic card game that I have been enjoying for more than two years. I'm honestly impressed that they were able to mix up the sealed format this immensely while supplying existing heroes to the pool and furthering their archetypal support. I didn't think it was possible that common level cards would have this big of an impact on an already established game of a few years.

Ranger's still fighting an uphill battle in a snowstorm, but the tools they received in this set (and to a lesser extent Dyn) are going to push them past their current breakpoint. I've always been SO CLOSE to greatness with my current Azalea deck, but now this little bit of juice might be all I needed to make it pop off.

Also the only Azaleas you need to worry about are the ones that have been downtrodden for years but unwilling to give up on her. Band-wagoners you soon discover that of course she looks good on paper, followed by misplaying her, and then pivot right back to braindead combo ninja or the latest assassin grindr.

It’s based on SIGNI class and color, and uniformly applied to each example.
You see stuff like Azure General or Jade Evil, which is a blue Brave SIGNI and a green Devil SIGNI. Then you have stuff like Code: Maze or Code: Eat which are for the Labyrinth and Cooking SIGNI, as the mech SIGNI have “code” in their title the same way the nature SIGNI like Atoms and Cosmos don’t include color signifiers.

The SR cards usually have “Princess” or “Queen” added to the title, or some variation like Electronics SIGNI not being “Code: Art” but “Code: Heart” instead while others don’t distinguish SRs at all.

Nothing, they're just not that complicated inherently. Really you just follow the recipe on the box with the combo system. Play card with combo 1, 2, effect into 3 is incredibly efficient, and spread out over multiple sources guarantees youre going to do chip damage. They used ninja class to introduce FaB to the world for a reason I think. It teaches us how to attack and block efficiently. Then there's characters or classes that sacrifice efficiency for some broken effect that steps beyond the core concept.

Sound like a Magic problem. Many /acg/ essentially have the opposite problem - they're too interactive and that pisses off normies.
For TCGs: unironically try FaB if you want something that has a chance of being in a LGS near you. I can also vouch for Wixoss as a game, but it comes with high levels of anime coom and is rare to see in shops even for an acg.
It's worth looking into Netrunner and Ashes too, both are more on the "LCG" side and will probably require starting your own group or playing online to get any games in.
Yes there's also Bandai games if you're into anime IP pump and dumps.

Fai is definitely one of the simplest heroes in the game, but the new Katsu has a lot of skill expression in his combo lines where Bonds and a few new go-again middle point combos allow him to freely mix and match a lot of his combo cards to achieve certain goals beyond just big damage. Honestly aside from their bad guardian matchup I think rangers are looking pretty good this set. At high levels, Azalea is pretty good into Iyslander (assuming they avoid getting chain CLF'd), especially with inertia tokens at her disposal. Rangers have a generally good matchup into most aggro decks as well, so once Oldhim is out of the picture they're likely to be some of the big gatekeepers of the format.

There's also niche cases where an equipment might get banished instead of destroyed (like in the case of Cyclone Roundhouse) where it might be relevant at some point.

Haven't looked through the cards too deeply, but Red does look easiest to pilot since it's pretty much "me big! Fight me now!" the Deck. I think White's Block shenanigans and ways to get cores from the void make it pretty strong, and Fanatech Elk is also incredibly silly. Plus it has some subtle counters to every other deck too. Purple looks interesting to play since it's mechanics bounce off each other pretty well; deal damage using the unblockable cards, enable the effect by removing cores, and kill off the ones that do block you using Curse spirits, though it seems like it'll have a hard time gaining momentum. Yellow's aggressiveness is pretty interesting too, especially since it's the only deck with the "reveal cards, take X cards and discard the rest" effect and thus go through your deck at a faster pace. -Gave rangers an extra free equipment to start the game with in the form of Quivers. Azalea got her own specialization quiver which lets her put aim counters at the cost of a resource on her arrows that she dominates, while every ranger got access to a "unbrick your hand" quiver and a "remembrance" quiver to fix some of the issues that people commonly complained about.
-Aim counter gating extra power on arrows, and a lot of new arrows to improve Ranger's non-aggro matchups. Whereas before Azalea had a massive power gap between her best arrows and her normal ones, the gap is a lot smaller with a lot of unique on-hits to mess with the opponent's turn.
-Rangers got a general boost in defense with the addition of new/reworking of existing traps; no block 4s, but they have a lot of block 3+s that improve a lot of matchups. Anti-equipment arrows also help in this regard to help ensure ranger can push critical arrows through when they need them.

Honestly Lexi has had no real issue being playable, she's always been mid or mid-high tier (she's gotten more than a few top 8 finishes at high level tournaments here and there). Azalea has been armory tier for a while but the best Azalea player in the world always has done well with her at high level events, though usually just short of top 8. With these new options, Lexi got a very small power boost but Azalea got a big one, so we'll see how that shakes out.

Just returned from the prerelease, 3h train but was worth it, as limited is very fun and generally prereleases are great events for most of the tcgs. Third with Uzuri, mixed many different cards and snatched a couple of victories with knife based cards. Won 4 packs, got pick related L. In all10 packs, only a single M: some guys was saying that M ratio was lowered, definitely feels like it
Set looks great, I think the most fun was the knife based cards, temped to test them in Arakni.

What do you mean by "too interactive"?
I've built interaction pretty heavily into the game I'm working on. Essentially anything that gets exhausted can be attacked, and any card that does anything gets exhausted, so doing things opens you up to interaction. Supporting also means that weaker cards can potentially beat over stronger cards, so you're almost never truly safe.

The bulk of the mass market prefers to have clear lines of play that aren't influenced very much by what the opponent is doing. They want to spin their deck's wheels more than anything else. The classic complaints are either "too thinky" or "too much disruption.
Keep in mind this is merely "too interactive" relative to a certain demographic's tastes. I'm not saying you have to cater to the normie audience, or that I think interaction is bad.

That is with out a doubt the most fun I've had at a prerelease weekend in quite a while. This set is incredible for limited play, and I can't wait to get in some games of Draft after it hit shelves. The six heroes felt really good, honestly and I'm glad they went for it. My main reason for liking six heroes is that a lot of people who are coming to the prerelease aren't sure what to play or what's good, so after one game you can immediately sideboard to a whole new hero that's in the same class and try a different approach with very minimal effort.

Thinking on past releases, you could kinda sorta do a easy ish hero swap out in Monarch with 2 talents system, but there's a whole core of your cardpool needing resleeved depending on if you change class but stay in talent.The absolute worst to swap out to a new hero with was Tales of Aria with the shared elements and fusing being such a big feature to keep in mind for deck building. But with Outsiders? It's simple. Sort your cards into seven piles.

>Class A - B - C - Both A&B - Both B&C - Generics - Euipment/Tokens

Boom. You can now count out which pile is the biggest/strongest and consider the inclusion of the multi class pile to bolster the class. Once you have your number, generally that's around 14 - 22 total cards, you begin to count out what you're missing to get you to 30 minimum from Generic pile. Optionally you can select 5 or 6 extra cards you consider good sideboard contenders for specific matchups and sleeve them but keep them out of the main deck until needed. Done. Oh and by the way, you can switch to a second hero with just a few card swaps. Super easy. I love it.

How do you figure? Ever since day one, even with the launch of English Diva, Wixoss have only had a few dedicated posters and half the time we’re ranting at each other or just pointing the new players towards decks. FaB’s got more posters for sure but like every other game meaningful convos dip for days or weeks at a time.

I guess besides the games that aren’t dead but aren’t really talked about much here, we’re consistent across long enough intervals but that’s it.

Is it something you just burn to score some extra damage or is there a specific strategy to it? Let's say it's considered "worth" if I score an extra 4 damage, considering most heroes have 40 health, is it just a numbers game unless they're super low? I can't imagine it feels like a super duper outplay to take them from 32 health to 28.

With Dorinthea in particular, I'd judge a good Bolters use to maintain tempo or begin a snowball effect on Dawnblade. If you have no follow up from it or your opponent was able to put you on the back foot after its use, then the effect was largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Half of the benefit of Bolters is the threat of activation, after all. If your opponent doesn't have to play around bolters because you popped it early on, you better have gotten a lot of mileage out of it.

The best case scenario is that you are able to line up its use with something like Twinning Blade + Steelblade Supremacy + Singing Steelblade + a blue, but that's rarely going to happen. Against aggro decks, a bolters pop that got an extra counter on a hand that otherwise couldn't is great, or a bolters pop that forced the opponent to block out on a turn they really didn't want to is also great. Against slower decks, a bolters pop that was able to force them out of their comfort zone (leaving them without an arsenal as Oldhim or Iys, for example) or one that puts a counter on your Dawnblade are all great uses.

Well they bumped up the power level on Ranger cards for starters. I will admit, I was anticipating LSS taking an overly cautious approach to balancing. That is of course to prevent archers from suddenly gaining way too much too quickly and blowing up the balance they are attempting to hammer out. That being said, they have given just the right amount of wiggle room to side step unwelcomed ranger hazards as well as serve up some juicy stuff to give them a bit more teeth.

Have a look at this absolutely lovely common card right here. Synergistic with a wide range of bows and equipment, 1 for 4 in yellow, pseudo opt 2, can find an arrow to replace itself with Azalea and put this sniper back into your deck. The one thing I love about FaB is that commons can be huge for opening up options for players without requiring a costly chase. Back bone cards like S S are pulling more weight than some majestics even in enabling certain strategies, like 360 no opt tall arrows. I could go on about the commons, like the status arrows elevating the bar to 1 for 6 with aim on a red - the number 6 coming after a good block is how you move mountains - but there's even bigger things to celebrate in this set. The legendaries are both highly playable and one covers up needing to glue Spring Tunic to your chest armor zone. Sunken treasure is a truly impressive equipment piece when you consider the reload mechanic and oh say... a spire sniper trigger after it was already arsenaled? Yes, please!

its turn based, no different then card games. in chess you cant "counter" or "bolt" at "instant speed" a piece before it makes its move. Player A moves a piece, then B does. At no point during player A's turn can B do anything.

2. The fact you can only take 1 action on your turn is what makes it interactive. You can't do something mid move, but you can do something in response to each action taken. This using Amon's definition you can very often disrupt what your opponent is attempting, thus making chess interactive.

Note that nowhere in anon's post did he mention counter or instant speed effects.

Besides design, is this partly due to each card having 3 versions for flexibility? I feel like it enables lower rarity cards to be run as a big finisher without relying on a bunch of rares. Like in say MTG mif you want a big boss it's almost always going to be at least Rare. But FaB let's you run a 1 pitch version that still hits really hard, and isn't necessarily overcosted as hell.

And the quivers are a good idea. Ranger seems to be mechanic heavy to just use the arrows at all, so I think it's fair to make things a bit more fluid to play with quivers.

Just came back from a Legend Story Studio's Flesh and Blood prerelease event and oh boy was it the most amazing experience I've ever felt in my life
As soon as the product hit the table one of the players immediately fainted, admittedly because the game was so fucking good
As the first draft round was going the wixoss player came that was watching us opening LSS product content came to me and said "I used to coom to beautiful anime girls exclusively but after seeing James White's magnificent trading card game I will now buy this", as everyone cheered and clapped excitement
I hope the guy who nearly died is okay though, as I am confident the game will continue growing
