Hopes are that it's a good and competently made RTs game with a story that isn't terrible at coving the setting, with what little we saw it seems fine but Frontier could always screw up somewhere. however, I doubt it will bring in a lot of new players to AOS since RTS games have become increasingly niche over the last 10 years.

People keep focusing on the "infinite" range while complaining about zombies. This is not a problem as it represents getting shit on from hacking each model apart in melee. The pulling from the back mechanism of the game is only simulating dudes piling forward to fill the space as the front ranks die, not magically killing dudes 40 feet away from you with your sword. All on death melee mechanics like Blaze and Murderlust should work this way from the unit, not measuring from the spot each individual happens to be when the unit is killed. Its neither non lore friendly or non thematically friendly or incorrect just because you can't corner charge cheese them and cheat them from their ability. The problem with zombies is simply that 5+ is too much damage for their cost.

Were you guys actually playing the rule correctly where the Harvester doesn't trigger if you exceed the wound count of the unit? I don't ask this sarcastically - it was literally something most people got wrong because of how it used to work in 2.0

If you deal ~10 wounds to 10 remaining Mortek, the unit dies and the harvester can't heal it. It doesn't give endless 4+ after saves. It's actually pretty easy for big hammers to chew through 20 and a lot of things to do it over the course of 2 combats. If you play it like it used to be, then yes it is extremely oppressive. Or, just kill the 10 wound potato behind it.

Feel like these are the worst models Ive painted in a bit. Are the scales salvageable at all? Not sure what to do here. Not done obviously but Im unsure if I should do a full wash to blend the back or if the combo just looks shit. Found out I prefer the brown skin at least

as the other anon said, strip the mini in something like LA totally awesome and use a hobby knife to get rid of those moldlines. reprime it again in better conditions so you dont get that speckly texture.

as for the scheme, your main issue is that you're using "filler" colors that don't leave a big impact on it as the core of your scheme, so it just looks boring. i suggest making the back scales something else in terms of color but keeping the light to dark scaling; a blue is just what i used here for convenience's sake but anything would work really.

other than that, i touched up a few other things just to make it look more "complete" and give a better picture of what it could look like in a more final state. its so easy as miniature painters to get absorbed in how "bad" things look now when they can get so much better later with just a few tweaks to our methods using the skills we already have.

by the way, nice job on the eye, it's basically perfect for what you need.

What are you guys working on tonight?

I'm playing a game tomorrow (my CoS vs Nighthaunt) so I'm building my second set of pic related to give the board a death theme. All told it will be two Sigmarite Mausoleums, so four Gardens of Morr. I think it'll be a decent amount of terrain for a 1k game.

Seraphon. They seem really weak right now. They have a strong magic build but aside from that they just seem very underwhelming. Skinks are meaningless chaff and the heavier elites appear less tanky and less damaging than other elites. The monsters are underwhelming.

I'd argue that's from lack of the psychosis required to build, paint, store and carry around and then play 300+ Zombies. If you're on say FS, or IJ etc where you're forced to charge in and interact with that statistically they outnumber you as they move up the field and grab each objective they want from you and you kill yourself if you fight them. Factor in regeneration each turn from your lord, 2 stacks of 60. There are definitely ways to beat it but half the roster you might as well just fold when you see the guy walk up with his steel bucket of models. Luckily that's purely hypothetical since even the most deranged tourney player would give up after 100.

I played 11 matches vs seraphon to this day, always the -1 damage kind. I played both Soulblight (no spam, a bit of everithing) and Stormcast and for my experience they are fine. A very solid army, their base stats are not great but they can pile tons of buff and debuffs. They do not punch that hard but they grind pretty well and have a more then decent table control.

It's pretty cool how the ogor campaign is characterized. They're not just aimlessly looking for food, they are very specifically trying to fuck over Har Kuron. As a result you get searing hot lard raining down. Strongpoints and minor settlements are targeted for their food produce. The mawpath strips the surrounding land of anything edible and some things that aren't. Patrols and scouts have no means to survive in the wilds for long since they can only last as long as whatever food rations and water they can carry out of the city. Small bands are picked off by roving ogors. Maws and fangs start appearing where they definitely shouldn't. Food riots become a concern in the city as stores start to run low.

As soon as the ogors started acting with a goal in mind things started getting very shitty, very rapidly.

I am trying to learn aos but my brain is too autistic to understand command abilities. I see theres the few listed in the rulebook, but then there are more on the warscrolls? Ive been looking on wahapedia and all the abilities on warscrolls look like always on passives or one time use things. what am i missing?

for example, is bellowing voice on the ogor frostlord on stonhorn a command ability, or is it always on? I see that unit commanders can issue commands to their units, is it the same ones in the rulebook or are they listed on the warscroll? I looked at the knight vexilator with banner of apotheosis's warscroll, do those abilities consume command points?

Command abilties consume command points. If it's not a command ability, it does not. Command abilities activated when applicable.
Abilities usually select targets during the hero phase or are auras that affect the appropriate units when within range. Then there's abilities that just affect the unit itself and are pretty self explanatory.

All command abilities will tell you that they are a command abilities. As an example, the doombull has Slaughterer call, and it reads:
You can use this command ability at the start of the combat phase. This unit must issue the command and the unit that receives the command must be a friendly WARHERD unit within 12" of an enemy unit and more than 3" from all enemy units. If you do so, you must attempt a charge with that unit.

Unique command abilities are taken as enhancements for some factions. Like Stormcast can take a command ability from their book as a "unique enhancement" which can be taken along side the usual artefact, spell, traits, etc.

They're from WD narrative AOS campaigns, usually pitting two different factions against each other. You can get some real good stuff with it, very fun with path to glory rules. There were a bunch towards the second half of 2e, then kinda quieted down after 3e released and now they've started picking it back up. Last one before that was Sylvaneth vs Idoneth due to Idoneth turning to harvest soulpods (it did not end well for them), and before that I think it was Skaven vs Gitz as they fight over the Best-Hole-to-Grow-Fungus-Or-Rat-Ogors™. They usually contain some real cool narration stuff and new battleplans specifically for the campaign.

It's not gonna be a building kinda RTS like Warcraft, which would have been great. It feels like alot of gaming companies have become lazy and won't put alot effort in making a deeper gameplay and Frontier looks like a decent company that could do something bigger then what to expect.

A game that I can play an entire month, without moving on to something else. I don't expect the story to be as impactful and brilliant on a Warcraft III kinda lvl but do something that I can remember in a good way. Add a map editor or sandbox and make the game moddable, that would keep it more alive. And perhaps an army painter like in Dawn of War? I wish the Freeguild could be in this game.

Fellow fa/tg/uys, what are your stories of 40k players having weird habits, superstitions and so one? Do you have any?
I personally have a different set of dice for every army I use and I do not like rolling other people dice (I have no problem with them using mine).

Also, on a bigger scale, in my usual shop there is an anon that will ALWAYS roll dice for heroes one at a time, no matter how many dice there where in the roll.

They're "semi-mortals" with devotion to Nagash but the free will to make their own conflicting decisions.

That's a super subjective question and it depends on what you mean by best.

OBR are supposed to be the epitome of perfection in what you would want in an army. Their whole purpose is to make more of themselves and study their enemy's strategy. They're the opposite of vamps in that they're mostly dispassionate and not usually egomaniacs. Basically, the embodiment of lawful evil WAAC.

Vamps are egomaniacs and prone to infighting, their loyalties basically end at themselves and nagash when he yanks on their leash. They're more like gangs or families/bloodlines than an actual military force.

Nighthaunt are more like a primordial force, most of their characters are based on some sort of twisted tragedy. The bulk of their forces are just angry spirits.

FEC are just like fucking crazy cannibals that live out in the middle of BTFO. Imo they're kinda the black sheep of death.

Personal favorite is OBR but SBGL is probably the most popular or easiest to write/push because they're fucking vampires, which is just code for pale humans.

Nighthaunt need new lore so badly. I remember back in 1st Edition there were references to independent realms of spirits living mockeries of their former lives and pursuing their own agendas.

Then they gave all that lore to Deathrattle and made Nighthaunt the no personality faction. An army so dull that GW were incapable of giving them subfactions for a whole edition, because there was virtually nothing to draw from.

I'd have liked if after the Shattering of Nagash in Broken Realms, peripheral Nighthaunt broke free from Nagash's grip and have formed their own scattered Underworlds within the realm of death, fighting eachother and all attempting to either embrace or unshackle themselves from Nagash's ironic punishments.

Yeh, from what i remember Nagash had them planned for a long time and stored bodies in preparation, but while boneshaping was always easy, soul masonry was borderline impossible before Necroquake filucked up magic to be more "unleashed".

SBGL does basically nothing new and is the same thoughtless and boring shit from WHFB. The Wight Kingdoms are interesting but basically ignored. The idea of normal humans incorporating with the undead is never meaningfully explored, which is a shame because mortal thralls supporting the Vampires and traditional undead on the table would be genuinely interesting and isn't something any of the other death factions could make work (OBR aren't risking their harvest/mortals can't coordinate on par with undead; FEC too insane; Nighthaunt basically a barely controlled spirit storm)

I wanna play something like Skaven or Nighthaunt or Ossiarch, but after trying a bunch of armies on TTS, the one I clicked with most is Stormcast. I suggest you get a single kit you like the most in a random army you like and paint it.
If you enjoy it, look at another kit or a vanguard for that army and build up to 750-1000 pts to be able to play small games.
If you still are not sure - get a small kit or a hero from a different army.
At worst you are left with a nice mini collection that you enjoy.

I was a little worried about this. Building up a NH army and I realized, what do they even do in their free time? Being an army of ghosts tends to limit their actions and motivations beyond the battlefield. They seem to just be the lackeys of Nagash, and as another anon put it "they're the villains of someone else's story."
I mean, it doesn't really matter in the end, I'm still going to be playing them. Just wish there was a bit more to them. I'll have to think of a creative way to make them my guys.

your issue then is going to be that stormcast 1000% do not carry over between them.

in terms of factions you could play in both:

slaves to darkness (most kits)
skaven
lizardmen (most kits)
beasts of chaos
slyvaneth (treemen and dryads)
ogor mawtribes
freeguild in Cities of Sigmar (whether the old kits that are out right now or the new ones releasing later this year they'll work as Empire stuff, though i imagine using anything but puffy sleeves will earn you a few dirty looks from grogs)

and thats about it. dark elves have stuff scattered across a few armies in Sigmar but anything that isn't in Daughters of Khaine is basically guaranteed to be squatted from the game sooner rather than later. same situation applies here for dwarves in fantasy who are Dispossesed in AoS.

I like how the Realm Lords' main military tactic is literally just phalanx (with archer and calvary support) like, they're just doing a normal ass war tactic. the rest of it you read over it and like, "oh, well, thats okay i guess" and you dont get the sense for how strong it is until you get on the table and have to start mulching through exploding zombies that just come back the next turn, or deal with the insane new healing on all the vampires turn after turn.

in AOSGs whiteboard every list is against 100 lumineth sentinels, so they rarely ever factor in actually having to fight things or hold objectives with bodies on the board, and that is something the new SBGL book is exceptionally good at.

Yes their battlelines are mainly formed of pikemen, that's the baseline, but their doctrine has less to do with shield walls and more to do with seizing initiative by way of rapid deployment and the nimble use of their versatile breadth of units.

the real answer is that it highly depends on what you want to play within each army, and even just saying "i want to play the gloomspite gitz" won't get you far since you can build some armies like five ways that all play different.

find the models you think you like in an army, and start building a list with what synergises with them. ask for advice, especially if you're new. play it with proxies before you buy it, continue tweaking, until you get a fun list that uses stuff you like and is effective.

if you take good care of a $15 brush with a small thing of brush soap it will keep its point and last much, much longer than a whole pack of the shitty ones. they're good for basecoating and for early hobbyists who will probably destroy their first set of brushes no matter what but they lose their point quickly even when trying to maintain them, which is really bad when that's basically the only thing you need out of a good brush.

Synthetics will ALWAYS begin curling/losing their tip at some point, usually pretty early on. Real sables won’t, but they can lose length or just their sharp tip in general, but won’t curl. I suggest investing in some real sable brushes, size 0,1, and 2. Make sure you only use them for acrylic paints. That means no washes, contrasts, or metallics at all, and do everything in your power to prevent paint from reaching the ferrule. Make sure to clean them regularly, too.
A temporary fix I’ve found for synthetics is using a hair straightener. Let it heat up, and use a squeeze bottle to place a big enough drop to cover the bristles of the brush. While the water is sizzling on the iron, VERY GENTLY stroke(while simultaneously twirling) the bristles on the iron through that sizzling water until the point is straightened out. Make sure you do not press too hard or hold it on there too long or you will melt the bristles. Another trick I’ve heard is to dip the brush in hot/boiling water and reshape the bristles yourself.

It’d be fun to see one where you think they’re supposed to be a Dawnbringer crusade clearing out monsters in their path and at some point in the book the POV switches to actual Dawnbringers trying to fight them off. It’d be even better if the cover didn’t feature a ghoul at all, instead make it a Dawnbringer, and only subtle hints leading up to the reveal that the original pov is a ghoul.

The problem with DoW2 was the retarded AI that turned any game into musical chairs. Couldn't get a proper fight without the enemy suddenly running away to go capture another point. I don't think RoR will do that, but it looks like the game will be built around the points which can drag a game out and takes time away from building/fighting.

Personally with the narrative of the Dawnbringer Crusades behind this game, I was hoping more for Age of Empires with a heavier base building focus to build up a Free City/Greenskin warcamp/Boneyard bonekeep/etc and use the settlements development to justify bringing in harder hitting units to keep what you gained. What I'm seeing instead is a lot of capture points you'll need to play keep away with the enemy.

Don't really need to write the new setting. Just make things that make sense for the faction. Stormcast need a stormkeep right? What would a stormkeep need for maintenence? Builder's quarter for the dwarfs building the walls, Artisan's guild for the elves that make the magic crystal shit for upgrades. Now how do you get more advanced units? Well they'll need their own quarters for storing their gear and all the extra stuff they need for their armor/mounts/whatever. You want Sequitors? Make a meditation chamber because they're priests and shit. Want fulminators? Dracoth roost so their mounts have a place to sleep.

I mean even DoW was able to do it by putting names to all the stuff the factions might put down for a forward base. Space marines had straightforward things like armories and beacons for bringing stuff from orbit. Orks had a pile of guns for upgrades and a hut for the boyz. I don't see why RoR couldn't do that too.

It was a lot of fun. They raised a big mideival standard and a standard bearer carried it along with a minstrel leading them with me and about 100 other drunkards in tow as we marched in a line precession from pub to pub to the sound of trumpets around the michigan Ren fest. I opted for mead, as the event was pretty early in the day and I wanted to be reasonably coherent for the joust (I was), my buddy opted for the super strong beer throwing caution to the wind (he was hammered an hour into the day lol)

Good time, if you're ever in Michigan near end of summer and early fall, I highly recommend. Tickets are cheap, like $20-30 at least as of 2016. Add one like the pub crawl brought the ticket price up to like $60 for the day, food is about $10-15 a meal which isn't horrible for an event. Alcohol and souvenirs can get a bit pricey but I mean hey, it's a festival, overpriced beer and trinkets is kind of the point.

The joust is legit and very professional, and the village is pretty cool. Lots of medieval carnival games and shows too

you know, you can get a printer for around $200 and just print an army. chaos dwarfs are a very popular army for print designers, i know there are at least 4 or 5 designers who have done more or less the full range. it would be significantly cheaper than the GW/FW models and arguably look better, and after it was done you'd have a printer to do other shit with.

lost kingdoms are probably the most faithful to the old chaos dwarfs so i'd start there, and they definitely have the full range and then some
