If you haven’t been, don’t go. You pay a lot to do things you can do anywhere. If you’re deadset, there’s the Burj Khalifa, Ferrari World, they have decent beaches, amusement parks, a great zoo, an amazing aquariums in the mall, and nice sporting facilities. They never tell you that you’ll be smelling shit from all the sewage trucks pumping out of the city. If you’re a rich man, you’ll have fun doing things you can probably do closer to home. If you’re on a budget, skip it.

I’m American too. While the initial awe of rolling down the desert and a bunch of tall, skinny skinny skyscrapers showing up all of a sudden is kinda neat, the appeal doesn’t last too long. The Great Mosques in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are beautiful though.

Dubai is a literal hotel and shopping mall mega-complex. If you have the money to spend and thats your thing then fine.
Otherwise look at desert excursions or other things to do outside of the city.

It's OK. A big mall for Western products, very little actual Gulf or Middle Eastern feel. Abu Dhabi is actually much more interesting as far as the UAE goes. They still have actual souks, real Arabian food, a really beautiful mosque, and you can still go see the Formula One if that's your thing. It's only about an hour drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and it's a nice one.

It's a lot of fun but very expensive. I went back in 2016 and it was expensive. It's probably far more expensive now. I'd only go if you have 10k to spend. That's how much I spent while I was in Dubai.

I went there for the Christmas season in 2018, arguably peak Dubai as far as it marketing itself on the global stage. Its not very different to most large cities, except for the novelty of looking at the burj just climbing up and up and up endlessly. Its a cool place if you are just looking for cities, but the reality of everything being a mall and based around consumption comes at you fast. I reccomend Singapore if you want to experience a true "global city", although keep in mind I am bias because I lived there for 2 years.
