Unironically this. You have to go to niche stores if you have anything approaching subtlety in your palate. Why? Food that isn't super cheap and chock-full of sugar just isn't competitive in the American market. The food industry and supermarkets are also both run by oligopolies, it's very hard for anything that isn't trash made by the same few companies to get its foot in the door on shelves.

As a world traveller (to conferences, academic junkets, fieldwork, etc.) people are in fact generally the same. As far as food is concerned, the best kind of food everywhere in the world is fine dining, of any cuisine. Fine dining of any kind of food is strictly better than poorly prepared versions of any other kind of food.

Everyone in here is retarded. Easy example off the top of my head is Georgian Food. It's a true hidden gem and it straight up does not exist in America. It's all over Eastern Europe (because it's amazing) but you basically can't get it outside of Ex-Soviet countries. I get cravings for pic related on the regular and there's nothing I can do about it except wait for my next trip to Eastern Europe. It's made with like 5 different cheeses; none of which you can find in even the most specialized cheese shops in America.

Georgian is great if you like getting fat. Bread and cheese are fine for a snack but you can't build an entire cuisine around it.

I liked Georgia but the food was pretty bland. Lobiani might be the worst thing I ever tried to eat. Bland bread filled with dry red beans. No spices or sauce or anything.

Khinkali were fine but not something I could eat every day.

Also, and i know this is a big meme, but the atmosphere plays a big role. Ragú that some local grandmom made in a small obscure town in the Italian mountains will just taste better than any home-made equivalent. The taste of bluefin tuna at 6 in the morning at the Tokyo fish market is just different than the same fish in your local 2 star Michelin restaurant.

Agriculture and culture matters too. The average amerimutt eat like shit but not because good food isn't available for them. America has a hunting culture and you can literally go shoot your own game animals and eat it instead of doordashing. Fine dining is heavily influenced by French haute cuisine in many ways (the kitchen organisation alone is a French influence that was birthed in the late 18th century) so no, not the most authentic.

A good authentic restaurant can be potentially found anywhere, but in my experience, kinda remote rural places with enough local tourism for them to make a bit more effort usually provides the best of both worlds, namely authenticity expected from the place and quality expected from people coming from a different place.

I've traveled around the world extensively and I can say etc certainty that Georgian food is very good, to a point that most food in the world was not impressive to me especially since I'm from the west and we have a lot of interesting dishes in west Georgia that isn't even available in the center Georgia
Now you can argue that this doesn't count because Georgian food is very popular in Russia and local countries, but I think it still counts because most of the world doesn't know about it

There are a lot of complicated dishes that for some reason westerners never try, in fact I would say that khachapuri and khinkali were not the most famous dishes in past they became the most popular in USSR because Russians loved it the most.
Here are some Georgian dishes to try

Another important thing is that even usual dishes like kebabs and grilled meat can be good because blend of spices are different, plus we also have good borrowed food from neighbors like dolma, adjapsandal, kebabs etc.
Even if you specifically like cheese breads be good to try stuff like achma instead of genetic khachapuri
I'm not saying that it's amazing best cuisine in the world, but it is good and varied, but for some reason people never eat other dishes

It's considered a treat to go to McDonalds in a lot of countries because you're doing something "cool and American" so it costs more than local food, despite not actually being good. This is the case in latin america too.

Yeah this, when starving Eastern Euros had McDonald's open in their cities for the first time, they treated it like the second coming of Christ.

If you watch the documentary TraumaZone about the collapse of the USSR, it's actually kind of sad how into it they were. The first one in Moscow was packed with a line around the block, smiling kids everywhere.

It's kind of shocking to think that McDonald's of all places is seen as one of the amenities of a modern, cosmopolitan city in some places.

OP here - wow, this thread is still going? Since you guys seem to think I'm full of shit, I'll post some food reviews from my travels to show you that yes, I've been around and tried a thing or two.

To start things off, here's a Ukranian borscht that I ate at a restaurant in Vancouver, BC. Very highly rated restaurant, the staff were visibly eastern european, looks colorful and authentic. The soup was the blandest fucking thing I have ever eaten. I am genuinely impressed that they managed to take the concept of a rich stew full of meat and vegetables and make it taste like absolutely nothing. It's like getting filled up and putting on calories without any of the satisfaction of actually eating food. The whole time I found myself wishing I had just bought a nice, salty, smoky, juicy hamburger, you know, something with actual flavor.

The peppers were alright, but they were stuffed with waaaay too much feta and I couldn't finish them.

Moving on, here's a proppa English pie that I ate at a historic pub in York, UK. Supposedly it had all kinds of interesting game meats in it, such as venison and cornish hen. I couldn't taste the difference -- the whole mess inside the pie simply tasted vaguely "brown", without any distinct notes of savoryness, or spice, or herbs. The gravy was thin and watery and did not add much flavor-wise. It was served with uninspired mashed potatoes and a pile of sad, completely unseasoned, flavorless steamed vegetables.

This is a tafelspitz that I ate in Vienna. Ate it at a local, homey cafe far from the touristy circle, but the interior was still incredibly nice and the service was exceptional.

I am not sure why so many countries think wet, unseasoned meat is an acceptable "dish", but here we are. The texture was fine and the tartar-like sauce was tasty, but once again, the main dish itself tasted like pretty much nothing. At this point I could go down to walmart, grab a brisket, and put some tartar sauce on it.

Also I forgot to mention, but why does every fucking food item in the UK have to be covered in puff pastry? Puff pastry is not that good. It tastes dry and adds a huge amount of unnecessary calories.

Wet, flavorless meat in a flavorless broth with unseasoned potatoes cut in such a way that they neither become crispy nor absorb any of the nonexistent flavor. Served with dijon mustard for some reason (I don't know how you're supposed to fit this into a stew, but I tried it anyway, and it was mediocre). I expected that it would be something like a shepherd's pie, with some rich, buttery potatoes on top that get nice and browned by the oven and a savory broth underneath. Nope. At least the wine was pretty good.

Can confirm as a kid growing up in post-soviet eastern europe. We had one show up in my little city right around the time I was born, so it was a huge deal to go there. Kids always wanted their parties there and going to it was the biggest treat you could get as a kid. Naturally it was pristine inside with immaculate service, and you would dress nice to go there, like you would for dinner at any other restaurant. It was actually really innocent and comfy looking back on it.
Coming to America and seeing how much shittier it was really shocked me. Of course now even back there it's become just as shitty and mundane.

Fair point. I think I was put off from a lot of the dishes just sounding bad. Shkmeruli might taste great but I never got around to tasting it. Some of the others like kharcho were nice when the meat was good quality but many times it was tough and gristly.

I have not heard of the rest of those and I was in Tbilisi for a few months.

I ate at Marge shawarma more times than I am willing to admit.

The trick here is to always travel and even live and work abroad the boomer way.

Stay in the foreign or expatriate district or the city. Eat out at Western restaurants, and if you want the local food, eat the toned down version for white people served at major hotel restaurants.

Always speak English, so any misinterpretations or misunderstandings aren't your fault. If you're visiting local hotspots, always go with a native tourguide whose job it is to wrangle everything so you don't have to.

Socialise with fellow travelers and foreigners, and the minority of Westernized locals and returning diaspora types.
