Lol you know nothing, crossbows were the standard everywhere in Europe, Normans already had them when they conquered England. The long bow was only used by the english, everyone else (dutch, italians, french, spaniards) used crossbows.
In fact it’s what led to the english losing the HYW when the bowmen were wiped out by french cavalry at Patay to never be seen again because they were an elite that cost a fuckload to train.
Their downside compared to matchlocks is that they were expensive to manufacture (including the bolts) and maintain, they had relatively complex mechanisms with cranks which needed different materials to handle the tension.
Meanwhile matchlocks were just a tube with a fuse.
